Children should be able to enjoy their youth without worries and fears. However, the world is dangerous, and they often find themselves in unexpected situations—sometimes with devastating repercussions.

Two brothers and their sister had just finished a day of school in Antioch, California, and headed home to their family. Sadly, they never reached their final destination.

They Were Energetic Children

Mason, Gianathan, and Cheyenne, all 12 years old, loved their blended family. They were energetic and had a passion for karate. Mom Jami Hanlin and dad Johnny Comfort adored their kids and knew the sky was the limit for them.

The kids were only two blocks away from their house when the shocking incident occurred, changing their lives irrevocably.

They imagined bright futures for their little ones, wishing only the best for them. Unfortunately, their worst nightmare became a reality in September 2022.

The Shocking Accident

Three of the couple’s kids were walking home from school as they did every day, going about their business and unaware of what would happen next.

Tragedy struck as two cars collided near the sidewalk they were on—Mason, Gianathan, and Cheyenne were hit. The siblings were in critical condition, and two were airlifted to the hospital.

A Resilient Daughter

The kids were only two blocks away from their house when the shocking incident occurred, changing their lives irrevocably. The children’s aunt revealed that the mother and father were heartbroken and didn’t leave the bedsides of their three precious kids.

They visited the siblings as often as possible, hoping for a miracle for all three of them. It was reported that Cheyenne was recovering at UC Davis and came out of a coma.

Her condition was improving, and she could breathe by herself. The siblings’ great uncle, Tim Comfort, said:

“She’s actually drinking water and talking on her own. It’s incredible. Very resilient girl.”

The Brothers’ Recovery

Cheyenne’s brothers were taken to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, where they were treated for various severe injuries. Mason was healing and would have a long road to full recovery.

Gianathan’s condition was devastating, and his family shared that he could be paralyzed and need assistance from a ventilator. While the mother and father declined to comment, their loved ones said they welcomed prayers and love.

Comfort expressed: “This should never have happened. [The] kids were just walking home from school.” The accident scene was filled with candles, balloons, and flowers as people showed their support for the kids.

Authorities conducted an investigation, and Officer Darryl Saffold shared that his thoughts and prayers went out to the family. He said: “My heart is broken for these kids. I hope and pray that they’re going to be okay.”

A young woman who chose to remain anonymous was one of the first people on the scene. She recalled the shocking ordeal and shared:

“From our house in the back, we could hear the father crying over his babies. It was really heartbreaking.”

“I just want a speed bump near my house so my kid can get to school safely. I worry about all our kids.”

A GoFundMe page was created to assist with the family’s hefty medical costs. By September 20, 2022, more than $20,000 had been donated.

“A disastrous event like this will cause enormous expenses for the family. Please find it in your heart to donate to [them],” a post on the page stated.
