A crueldomestic abuser who tried to control a woman’s life and even caused a car crash as he strangled her has been jailed for over five years.
Matthew Aldridge, 33, of Lord Street, Rotherham, caused the woman to live in fear as he limited contact with her friends and family and used physical and emotional violence and threats to coerce her.
Sheffield Crown Court heard of Aldridge repeatedly attacked and threatened the woman, and on one occasion even caused a car to crash as he strangled her while they were travelling.

Even after his victim bravely reported Aldridge to the police, he tried to intimidate her and forced her to change her statement so he could get away with his crimes. He was jailed for five years and two months last week after previously pleading guilty to crimes including coercive and controlling behaviour, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intimidating a witness, dangerous driving, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon.
He was also made the subject of three eight-year restraining orders and a 49-month extended driving ban. Officer in the case for South Yorkshire Police, PC Rowley, said: “Aldridge subjected his victim to years of abuse and has caused serious emotional and psychological harm that will no doubt have a long-lasting impact on her daily life.
“Domestic abuse is a serious and horrendous crime. I hope this sentence sends a clear message to those who seek to use emotional and physical abuse to control and destroy the lives of others that the police will investigate thoroughly and seek prosecution to bring you to justice.”
