Afton Smith Kept Ex-husband’s Surname – Facts about Brendan Fraser’s Ex Wife

Brendan Fraser and his ex-wife, Afton Smith, celebrated nearly a decade of marriage and welcomed three children before announcing their marriage was ending. The exes soon after found themselves in a legal battle that saw Afton Smith accuse the actor of hiding money.

Brendan Fraser met his former wife, Afton Smith, during his rise to fame, and the ex-couple married soon after. During their marriage, the two actors shared the silver screen in the 1990s and welcomed their first child in the early 2000s.

However, martial bliss only lasted so long as less than ten years later, the former couple was at odds in the courtroom over alimony and child support following a lengthy divorce.

Afton also shared the silver screen with her ex-husband when she landed a role in “George of the Jungle,” in 1997, where Brendan played the iconic outdoorsman George while she played a small part.

After meeting in 1993, Brendan and Afton said “I do” in 1998 and welcomed three children. However, in 2007, the famous couple announced their nearly decade-long marriage was ending. Brendan’s publicist shared:

“They continue to maintain a close and caring friendship.”

Despite the actor’s publicist’s words, Afton and Brendan found themselves in a nasty court battle. According to the actress, her ex-husband was hiding money and lying when he pleaded with the court to lower his alimony and child support payments.

Brendan’s ex-wife has also written multiple books, and at the time of publication, Afton had amassed over 400 followers on her private Instagram account.

Brendan, whose divorce from Afton was only settled in 2009, alleged that he could no longer afford the annual payments of $900,000 he initially agreed to as he was not making as much as he used to, which Afton revealed she was not buying.

During their nine-year marriage, Afton and her ex-husband welcomed three sons: Griffin Arthur Fraser, Holden Fletcher Fraser, and Leland Francis Fraser. The former couple welcomed their eldest son on September 17, 2002, and during an interview, Brendan revealed that Griffin was autistic. The actor said:

“He needs extra love in the world, and he gets it. [He is] a curative on everyone who meets him, I noticed.”

Holden was born two years later, and in November 2022, he proved he was all grown up when he made a rare public appearance with his famous dad at the screening of Brendan’s film “The Whale” in New York City.

Afton and Brendan welcomed their youngest son on May 2, 2006, and the actress’s ex-husband shared that Leland is “a professional fire plug.”

Since leaving acting behind, Afton discovered her passion for real estate after buying, selling, and renovating multiple of her own homes in Los Angeles, Westchester, and Greenwich.

This prompted her to become a licensed real estate professional and a member of the National Association of Realtors, the Greenwich Board of Realtors, and the Greenwich Multiple Listing Service.
