Popular resort, Alton Towers, has today announced the sudden closure of a much-loved attraction than has been part of the complex for 21 years.

The spa has been permanently closed, resort bosses confirmed today. They said whilst it was ‘a difficult decision’, it is ‘essential for the future growth and development of the resort’. The facility closed its doors for the final time on December 31, Manchester Evening News reports.

The spa, which has been part of the resort for more than two decades, boasted an outdoor log sauna and tepidarium, whirlpool and jacuzzi, multi-sensory showers, an Edwardian sauna, steam room and offered a wide range of packages and treatments.

Following the news, Alton Towers customers with bookings for 2024 have been advised they will be contacted in due course to arrange refunds or alternative options.

A spokesman at Alton Towers Resort said: “After careful consideration, we have taken the difficult decision to close the Spa located on-site. This was a difficult decision but one we feel is essential for the future growth and development of the resort.”

“Our top priority has been supporting our employees at the Spa during this time, including with advice on career opportunities available across the resort. We are also in the process of contacting guests with bookings in 2024 to discuss alternative options. We sincerely appreciate the loyalty and support of our valued guests and dedicated colleagues throughout the years.”

Ten members of staff are affected, but the company says it is looking to re-assign as many as possible elsewhere within the Merlin-owned resort. The Alton Towers Spa has received nearly 200 ‘excellent’ reviews on Tripadvisor.

One visitor recently shared: “It was a fantastic day really lovely and clean and the facilities were brilliant. I would also like to mention how professional Sarah and Lucy were who did my and my partner’s massage. They were really amazing and we will definitely be back thanks to how great the staff.”

Another guest posted: “We went to the spa for my partner’s 50th birthday. The staff are lovely, everything was spotlessly clean and the treatments were amazing!!! Definitely recommend and would go back!!”

The spa opened in 1996, originally as a themed Pirate’s Lagoon. It was eventually turned into the spa in 2003 after the park’s water park opened. It is not yet known what will replace the spa.

Alton Towers is currently offering their festive breaks up until Sunday, January 7. Alton Towers will then close until the new season on Saturday, March 16. For more information, visit the website here.
