So who played matchmaker for Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom? It was, in fact, Samberg’s “Saturday Night Live” co-star Fred Armisen who introduced Samberg to Newsom at one of Newsom’s concerts in 2008. Apparently, the pair adored each other before even meeting. In a 2010 interview with Rolling Stone (via Elite Daily), Newsom told the outlet, “I remember being on tour, watching his old, pre-SNL stuff with my band, forwarding it to friends.”
Newsom elaborated on her initial introduction to Samberg in an appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” She shared, “I was a big fan of his. In fact, the night that I met him, Fred Armisen brought him to one of my shows. And I had just been with my band backstage, like, an hour before, watching Just 2 Guyz.” Just 2 Guyz was a short skit in which Samberg played the small role of Steve the c**t. Newsom continued, “So when I met him, he was kinda shy, and I said, ‘Oh, my God, you’re Steve the c**t!’ He always says he saw heart bubbles.”
