Burt Bacharach, the legendary composer of many famous pop songs, passed away at the age of 94. Throughout his life, the composer was honored for his musical prowess with Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards, and countless famous artists have covered his work, be they rockers, punks, or classical purists.

Burt grew up with jazz and classical music and would often turn up his nose at the music of the rock movement. That didn’t stop many different musicians in almost every genre from covering his music. His easy-listening melodies inspired everyone from Elvis to the more modern White Stripes and left a genuine mark on music history.

Burt’s musical career also led to many a romance. He met his first wife, Paula Stewart while working as a pianist. His second wife, Angie Dickinson, came across his path a few years after he divorced Paula. Burt and Angie said their vows in 1965 and had one daughter together.

Although their marriage ended in divorce, Burt and Angie spent 15 years together, and both were incredibly proud to be the parents of their daughter, Nikki. The pair went their separate ways in 1981, and their daughter sadly died by her own hand in 2007. She was 40 years old.

The Loss of a Daughter: Angie and Burt’s Different Visions of Nikki’s Life

Nikki faced tough challenges since birth. Burt and Angie’s daughter was born three months and 20 days prematurely, and she spent the first three months of her life in an incubator. Heavily underweight, the doctors told her parents Nikki wouldn’t survive her first night. To everyone’s relief, she did.

When Angie fell pregnant with Nikki, she and Burt already had marital problems. The composer explained that he was immature and unfaithful, but when he heard he would be a dad, he tried his best to turn things around. He knew he wanted his baby to have a good life.

As Nikki grew up, though, Burt and Angie realized Nikki was having some serious developmental issues. By the time Nikki was four, they knew Nikki needed professional help, although even the professionals would misdiagnose her for years, which only exasperated her condition.

After spending 10 years in a treatment center having been misdiagnosed, Nikki’s various symptoms worsened. Nikki was only properly diagnosed at 34, and it turned out she suffered from Asperger’s syndrome — a form of autism. Tragically, only six years later, Nikki took her own life.

Burt’s daughter Raleigh Bacharach chose not to follow in her dad’s footsteps. Instead, she decided to specify in public health at the San Diego State University and now works in Pitkin County as a health promotion program administrator. Raleigh became engaged in 2022.

Burt’s youngest son, Oliver Bacharach, tried to follow in his dad’s footsteps for a while. In 2016, Oliver accompanied his dad on tour, playing the keyboard in front of hordes of fans. These days, however, Oliver keeps himself busy with his homemade ice cream brand, Afternoon Deelite.

While Burt moved on after the death of his daughter, Angie decided to retract. She never remarried after separating from Burt, and she didn’t start a new family. That said, the retired actress was spotted in 2021 outside her house for the first time in three years, and she looked relaxed and healthy.
