Anupama became the wife of Satya in 1992, a marriage that has stood the test of time and remains incredibly strong to this day.

Shortly after their wedding, the pair settled in Seattle and prepared themselves to welcome their first child. They decorated the nursery and envisioned how their lives would change upon the arrival of their child. However, they were not prepared for the surprise they got when their baby arrived — he had cerebral palsy.

Anupama Nadella’s Father Worked for the Government

Anupama was born around 1971-1972 to father, K. R. Venugopal, who was an Indian Administrative Service officer and a batchmate of Satya’s father, B. N. Yugandhar.

She attended Hyderabad Public School, where she met her future husband. Theirs started as a solid friendship, with Satya later admitting that meeting Anupama was one of the two most distinct experiences that influenced his life.

After completing school, Anupama started building a career as an architect, even as Satya leaned more toward being an engineer.

While her husband has continued to focus on his executive position at Microsoft in recent years, Anupama got involved in numerous charity works. In 2020, she donated 20 million Indian Rupees, an equivalent of $244,539.

There Was a Prime Minister at Anupama and Satya Nadella’s Wedding

The lovebirds married in a hard-to-forget wedding in 1992. Despite trying to keep the ceremony low-key, Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao caught wind of it and turned up at the venue uninvited. According to the Times of India, he even scolded the newlyweds’ parents for not inviting him.

Anupama and Satya would later welcome three children, Zain in 1996, Tara, and Divya. But despite Satya’s demanding position at Microsoft — which he joined the same year he and his wife walked down the aisle — he still found time to spend with his wife and kids.

Unfortunately, in 2022, the family suffered a heartbreaking loss after their son Zain passed away at 25. Zain reportedly also suffered from various other ailments besides cerebral palsy — he was legally blind and had spastic quadriplegia.

Satya has openly shared his son’s journey living with cerebral palsy. In a 2017 LinkedIn post, he wrote, as USA Today reports:

“He is the joy of the family, whose strength and warmth both inspire and motivate me to keep pushing the boundaries of what technology can do.”

In 2017, Satya gave a rare insight into his family life, opening up to Good Housekeeping about the joys and the unexpected challenges that came with being parents of three — one of whom was entirely dependent on his parents due to his condition.

For Anupama, life has been “controlled chaos.” As the wife of the executive of such a large tech company, she was used to juggling demands, but raising a special needs child (much like Jenny McCarthy, Colin Farrell, and Joe Mantegna) was the most eye-opening. She said:

“Our journey, as traumatic as it has been for Zain, has taught my family not just how to cope but also the power of kindness. I learned the empowering art of being kind to others. And it taught me to find that kindness for myself.”

After so many years together and the challenges they have been through, Satya is not short of great words to describe his wife. He says she is “an amazing woman, mother, and partner.” He has also learned empathy from her, which he has infused into his role as a father and corporate executive.
