The Great British Bake Off was back on our screens tonight with the second week of the new competition.

This year, as part of series 14, Alison Hammond has joined Bake Off debut alongside Noel Fielding to present the show. Judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith are also back to oversee a fresh dozen bakers (not a baker’s dozen) battling to be win that GBBO serving plate.

This week the 11 remaining contestants were asked to put their best biscuit skill making to the test. This week the judges wanted the contestants to make some iconic biscuits with “perfectly set” marshmallows. Their second task was to make 12 identical custard creams. Third and finally, the contestants had to be “a little bit artistic”, Paul said, as they created a ‘banquet dinner’ out of biscuits.

Tension was in the air as the contestants attempted to make their marshmallow treats perfect This week Tasha got a “well deserved” handshake from Paul for her fluffy creations.

But fans were left shouting at their TV after the mispronunciation of marshmallow on the show. Many rushed to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share their frustration. @gosulli said: “Is it just me or was Noel saying ‘Marshmellow’ not ‘Marshmallow’? #GBBO.”

@DrunkEnough said: “The Great “Marshmellow/ -mallow” controversy is so much nicer than last year’s Mexican controversy. But no one needs to bring up parma violets ever again. #GBBO.”

@mister_tee added: “Looking askance at everyone who pronounces it ‘marshmellow’. Hate it. Honestly this episode’s a difficult watch #GBBO.” @EmsyLamb said: “Why do people insist on pronouncing it, ‘marshmEllow’? It’s marshmAllow! #GBBO.”

@pauline44 said: “I’m not imagining Alison is saying ‘marshmellow’ every time am I? Is it not marshmallow?”

And that wasn’t the only thing that was getting fans riled up on social media. Fans of the show branded the custard cream task “pointless”, and said they “don’t like” the iconic British biscuit.

@stevecrumley said: “Why would you bother baking custard creams??? You can buy a whole packet for about 40p! #gbbo #bakeoff” @julesno6 said: “Nobody in the history of man has ever made their own custard creams… they’re 15p in Aldi #GBBO.”

@AlanosaurusRex added: “There could never be anything faultless about a custard cream. They’re disgusting. Every child was taunted with them while the adults got the good biscuits. They should be banned and compensation given. #GBBO.”

@AmbientCosmos said: “Absolutely rubbish custard creams. Rubbish. #GBBO.” But others said they were craving the biscuits after seeing them on screen. @themaninglass added: “Really fancy a custard cream now #GBBO.”

@Jess_Tyrrell said: “After a very busy day at work there’s nothing better than watching a bunch of people stress over making custard creams #GBBO.”
