“The commissioner of police told you we’re coming. We are here.”
Those were the terse words police officers had for a 19-year-old accused of rioting after the Wakeley stabbing attack, the first and likely not the last to face arrest over the incident that hospitalised five police officers.
The police officer referred to comments made by NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb, who warned anyone who took part in the riots that they could expect “a knock at the door”.
Webb told ABC Radio National on Wednesday it was believed the riot included people who weren’t affiliated with the Christ the Good Shepherd Church, but just “turned up as an excuse”.
The young man arrested at Doonside was taken to Blacktown police station and charged with riot, affray, and destroying/damaging property during public disorder.
He was refused bail and will appear in Blacktown Local Court on Thursday.
Strike Force Dribs is tasked with tracking down and arresting anyone who participated in the riot, which police say involved 600 people.
After a 16-year-old allegedly stabbed Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel during a livestreamed sermon and injured a priest, paramedics who attended were forced to take shelter inside the church for more than three hours as rioters tried to break in and gain access to the alleged attacker.
Projectiles were thrown at police who also had their cars damaged. One officer suffered a broken jaw.
