After hours of dancing at her daughter’s wedding, Paulina began walking to the bathroom only to accidentally catch the groom going inside with one of the bridesmaids. Suspicious of them, she got her phone out and started recording and was horrified by the scene.

There’s nothing like a wedding to bring a family together, Paulina thought as she grabbed her husband, Eric, to head off the dance floor. Of course, you can always count on some drama.

Uncle Marty had gotten a little drunk and was now flirting with some bridesmaids. Aunt Olivia was crying because her own daughter hadn’t gotten married yet, and she was the oldest of the generation. Cousin Kelly was eyeing the centerpieces like a hawk.

“No one’s gonna stop her from stealing that anyway,” Paulina said, grinning at her husband.

“Yeah,” her husband said. “I don’t care. As long as Gina is happy.”

Yes, all that mattered was their daughter, who had just gotten married to Burton and was blissfully happy.

“You’re right,” she agreed. “Let me go freshen up. All that dancing in this heat is not good for makeup.”

Her husband nodded dismissively, waving to a server for something to drink while she walked off. Walking to the bathroom, her thoughts turned to happier things. Like Gina and Burton making a honeymoon grandchild for them.

“Shush! Let’s go in here,” a female voice rang as Paulina rounded the corner. Her eyes widened at the sight of Janet, one of the bridesmaids, pulling Burton into the bathroom with a tight grasp on his arms. The hairs on her arm lifted with visible goosebumps as her protective motherly instincts erased all traces of happiness for her daughter.

“No,” she shook her head. “Nothing bad is going on. Nothing bad is going on.” She repeated like a mantra.

However, Paulina couldn’t just walk away. She stepped closer to the bathroom and could hear Burton and Janet’s voices rapidly but couldn’t discern anything. What would she say to Gina? That she saw them sneaking into the bathroom to talk? It wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things. They could even be planning a surprise for her daughter.

But something told her that wasn’t it. She grabbed her phone, pulled up the video, and began recording as she pushed the door open. Fortunately, Burton and Janet were too focused on each other to notice. Unfortunately, they weren’t talking.

Paulina had caught them in a tight embrace, and suddenly, he pushed toward one of the stalls, closing the door behind them. The only bright side was that Paulina could enter the bathroom without being seen. Still, her heart broke for her daughter.

For God’s sake! He cheats on her wedding day! she thought, outraged, getting closer to the stall.

They must have stopped kissing because Janet had started speaking. “Do you promise? Only a year?” she asked, breathless from passion.

“Yes. I spoke to a lawyer already,” Burton replied.

“Tell me what he said,” she insisted.

“I need to be married for a year to fight for half of her money. With any luck, her father’s heart condition will finally give, and she’ll get more of her inheritance,” Burton explained. The sound of their intermittent kisses made Pauline gag silently. “I’ll take what I can, and then, you and I will live the high life in Greece like we always planned!”

“Oh, God! Yes! I want you right now!” Janet exclaimed, and their conversation ceased. Other sounds came from the stall, and Paulina couldn’t take it anymore.

Her hands trembled as she stopped the video and rushed out of the bathroom to her husband. He was still at their table, finishing his drink.

“Oh, good! You’re back. The music’s getting good, baby. Time to show these kids how we dance in our days!” Eric got up, buttoning his jacket.

She hated this. A few minutes ago, they were all exceptionally happy, including Gina. Now… the world had ended. But she couldn’t break down. “Eric, come! You have to see this quickly!” she grabbed his hand and pulled him off to a quiet place.

Her husband was confused, but Paulina pushed her phone into his hands and pressed play. The happiness drained from his face just as it did for her.

“That son of a—”

“We can’t lose our cool now. We have to tell Gina immediately! We have to get her marriage annulled. NOW!” Paulina said, the rationality calming her nerves.

“Yes,” Eric nodded, his hand running down his shirt nervously. “Go tell Gina. I’ll call Mr. Samberg.”

Paulina rushed to her daughter, who was laughing with one of her friends. “Mom, have you seen Burton? I want to dance!” she asked excitedly, and once again, the older woman had to brace for what she would do.

Gina came willingly, saw the video, and didn’t explode like her father wanted to. Instead, she clicked some things. Paulina told her Eric was already calling their lawyer for an annulment, and Gina nodded. “Good, Mom. Now, go sit down. Don’t say another word to anyone,” she requested.

But Paulina saw her whispering something to the other bridesmaids. Some went to the back room.

Paulina’s eyes flew to Burton as soon as he returned to the room. A few seconds later, Janet was back, too.

Suddenly, one of the groomsmen stood in the middle of the dance floor, clinking a fork on his champagne glass. “I would like to make a toast for my friend and the love of his life,” the man started. Paulina wasn’t sure she could now sit through the speeches and toasts for her daughter.

“The other groomsmen and I prepared a short video,” he continued. “Congratulations, Burton. We love you!”

Everyone clapped as the room got darker, and a projector came to life. At first, only white light was coming out, but soon enough, the video Pauline had captured was displayed on the screen with full audio.

Gasps. Outrage. Disbelief.

All kinds of emotions filled the room. The groomsmen were in shock. Except for Janet, the bridesmaids seemed informed and were staring at her with total disdain. Gina snatched the microphone from the groomsman’s hands.

“Wedding’s over, everyone,” she said matter-of-factly, and Paulina saw the gesture she shot their way. It was their turn to move.

“Let’s go,” Paulina urged her husband.

Burton and Janet were walking behind Gina, trying to make excuses, but the bridesmaids got in their way, allowing Gina, Paulina, and Eric to leave quickly. He drove them to a lawyer’s office, who had already started the paperwork.

He promised that with the video evidence, their daughter wouldn’t have a problem with the process, and Burton wouldn’t have a claim to anything. However, despite his assurance, the three left that office with all their energy drained.

“I’m so sorry, darling,” Paulina said, tears finally surfacing.

“I’m sorry, too,” Eric said quietly.

“It’s not your fault, Mom, Dad,” she shook her head. “I’m just glad you caught them in time for this.”

“What can we do?” Paulina begged, helpless.

“You did everything right,” Gina said. “Next time, I won’t skip the prenup.”

Eric laughed despite himself, and Paulina mustered a smile. Their daughter would be alright.
