Switzerland has been named as the Country of Honor at the 2024 edition of the Cannes Marché du Film, running alongside parent event the Cannes Film Festival from May 14 to 22.

The spotlight is being organized by promotional agency Swiss Films, in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Office of Culture and the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation SRG SSR.

The Swiss delegation, featuring filmmakers, producers, and industry experts, will participate in the market’s programs dedicated to fiction and non-fiction feature films, as well as immersive projects and innovation.

The Marché du Film noted that Switzerland consistently ranks in the top ten attending countries of the event, partly thanks to the fact that the territory is a major player on the co-production scene.

Productions either led by Switzerland or involving Swiss partners that have made their mark in Cannes include Claude Barras’ stop-motion film My Life as a Zucchini, which world premiered in Directors’ Fortnight in 2016 and was then Oscar nominated in Best Animated Feature category.

More recently, French-Swiss co-production Marguerite’s Theorem by Anna Novion was presented as a Special Screening in the 2023 edition of Cannes, while Alice Rohrwacher’s Palme d’Or contender La Chimera, involved a Swiss co-producer alongside the Italian lead producer and French co-producer.

“Switzerland as our new Country of Honour demonstrates the remarkable evolution and impact of Swiss cinema. Their diverse activities planned for 2024 also emphasize their strong commitment to industry growth, and the Marché du Film is honored to be the key moment in Switzerland’s ambitious agenda,” said Marché du Film executive director Guillaume Esmiol.

“They are, most of all, a very innovative country in terms of creativity and technology, which aligns perfectly with the positioning of the Marché, the leading market at the forefront of innovation and industry trends. We eagerly anticipate a fruitful collaboration.”

Switzerland is the third country to receive the Country of Honour title, following India in 2022 and Spain in 2023.

At its 2023 edition, the Marché du Film welcomed unprecedented 14,000 professionals at its 2023 edition; showcased more than 4,000 films and projects in development and hosted more than 200 networking event.
