After spring tides and powerful waves overwhelmed sea defences, people have been warned to “stay away” from Hornsea beach.

South Promenade has been shut due to the flooding, with further problems predicted at high tide this evening, at around 7pm. Karl Shannon, the leading coxswain at Hornsea Rescue, shared these photographs of giant waves cresting over the barrier and one car stranded in the flood water.

In a Facebook post, Karl warned Hornsea residents: “Beach straight closed again due to flooding. As usual, someone has tried to drive through it.” He added: “I have checked no one is in the car. New road also starting to flood and unpassable. Stay safe Hornsea. Humber Coastguard and Humberside Police informed.”

In a statement this morning, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “We have had to close South Promenade at Hornsea this morning due to flooding caused by the high tide, with waves overtopping the sea wall. Another high tide is expected this evening, so the road will remain closed until at least until tomorrow morning as a precaution. Our teams are continuing to monitor the situation.”

The Environment Agency has issued a red “act now” flood warning – the second highest – for parts of Hornsea, warning residents to turn off gas, water and electricity, move things upstairs or to safety, and move family, pets and cars to safety, reports Hull Live.

It said: “This Flood Warning has been issued due to the combination of high tides, surge and wave action forecast on Monday morning between 7pm and 9pm. Flooding is expected at properties from Marine Drive, along South Promenade, Hornsea Burton Road and along Stream Dike and Foss Beck at these times. We are expecting higher than normal tides as a result of spring tides and positive surge.”

In addition, flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible, are in place for the entire Holderness coast between Ulrome and Spurn Point.
