When Carrie Underwood was still a child, she made a big vow to herself about the type of man she wouldn’t marry. Then she met her husband, Mike Fisher, and he broke her resolve with his love.

Carrie Underwood was single and not looking for a relationship or marriage when a friend said they could hook her up with a Canadian athlete. Mark Childers, her bassist, was friends with Mike Fisher, a National Hockey League player.

Underwood was skeptical about going on a blind date since she lived in Franklin, Tennessee. Fisher was based in Canada, and she wasn’t keen on a long-distance relationship. She thought their first meeting could be awkward and devised a plan.

The singer arranged with Childers that they meet backstage at one of her concerts. The initial meeting was casual but worthwhile because their physical chemistry was evident, and Underwood thought her date was hot!

The Ottawa Senators player also had the same sentiment as he thought the singer was “more beautiful in person than on TV.” Usually, when Underwood dated someone, she always had doubts, but for some reason, with Fisher, she never worried

While dating, the couple talked on the phone for around three months before meeting again physically. Their first date was on New Year’s Eve, and they also shared their first kiss when the ball dropped.

Underwood was the one who made the first move as they were in front of people, and Fisher wasn’t too keen on public displays of affection. The singer made him kiss her in public as she figured he wouldn’t leave her hanging.

In May 2012, the couple spoke about that first kiss during an appearance on OWN. Fisher admitted that his date forced his hand and that the kiss happened just as the New Year’s countdown began.

The country singer confessed how things fit perfectly with her new boyfriend. Being a big celebrity in Canada meant Fisher understood the industry and media and was well accustomed to traveling a lot.

He and Underwood were entirely independent in their long-distance relationship and could go for weeks without meeting physically. The songstress didn’t worry when Fisher didn’t answer his phone because she trusted him.

The athlete was so crazy about the musician that he proposed to her in 2009 “in the middle of a snow-covered forest just before Christmas.” He surprised Underwood by flying her to Canada for the holidays.

Then Fisher and the former “American Idol” champion went for a walk in the woods, and he went down on one knee and proposed with a diamond engagement ring calling out her full name, Carrie Marie Underwood, and this was how she responded:

“I tackled him in the snow. I forgot to even look at the ring, like, I wasn’t even paying attention.”

Both were quite religious and took some time to pray for their marriage to be filled with joy. They asked God to watch over them, their plans, marriage, and all things that would happen going forward.

THEIR GLORIOUS WEDDING AND RECEPTION

The Grammy Award winner and Fisher’s wedding happened in July 2010 and was held in Greensboro, Georgia, at the Ritz Carlton Reynolds Plantation. Two hundred family members and friends were in attendance.

The hotel was decorated with “a lot of flowers,” and although the event allegedly cost $500,000, a source said the party was “down-to-earth…[it] wasn’t really flashy.” The food for the reception was mostly catered for in-house.

Despite Underwood finding love with Fisher, the pair almost didn’t end up together because of a vow the singer once made to herself. She made her confession during episode one of “Mike and Carrie: God & Country” special by I am Second.

The singer shared how her husband had grown up hunting and that it was a big part of his life growing up. Ironically, she grew up on a cattle farm and had opposite views about animals, as she doesn’t eat meat and doesn’t buy animal by-products.

Underwood explained that she “always swore I would never marry a hunter as a child, not in a million years.” When they got married, the songstress thought her husband would stop hunting, and he thought she wouldn’t care!

That’s when the couple learned the hard way that they “differ[ed] drastically.” That wasn’t the only thing they had differences about, like Underwood was never that much into children and wasn’t good with other people’s ones, while he wanted lots of them!

CARRIE’S TOUGH JOURNEY TO BECOMING A MOM

Despite Underwood’s views on children, she and her husband wanted them together in their marriage. However, the journey to becoming parents wasn’t an easy one, even though the couple now share two sons, Isaiah and Jacob.

Isaiah was born five years into Fisher and Underwood’s marriage, and the couple knew they wanted to give the boy a sibling. The musician got pregnant quite quickly, but months into her second pregnancy, she suffered a miscarriage.

The star had initially thought miscarriages happened to other people and weren’t something she ever envisioned occurring to her. However, Fisher was confident they would have another child.

He told his wife about his beliefs and even revealed that the boy would be named Jacob. Underwood was quite skeptical, but her husband explained that he sensed what would happen to them.

Not long after Fisher’s premonition, the couple got married and lost yet, another baby. The singer felt hopeless and cried and crawled into her bed to sleep with Isaiah before conversing with God.

She told God how she felt, that she was hurt and somewhat angry, but felt bad for being mad at her creator. Underwood asked God to either let them have a child or not because she couldn’t bear any more miscarriages.

During their next doctor’s visit, the couple found out that their latest pregnancy was viable, and an ultrasound confirmed the news! They both knew they were looking at baby Jacob!

Fisher and Underwood later discovered that Jacob in the Bible was the one who wrestled with his creator overnight, not allowing God to go until his blessing was granted – just like what the singer did before she got her good news!

In 2013, she [Carrie Underwood] also opened up about her secrets to a long-lasting marriage.

Jacob Bryan was welcomed in January 2019. A Closer Weekly insider revealed how Underwood was in awe of how much she’d been blessed and that she and her husband would “cherish every single moment.”
