Carrie Underwood wasn’t interested in a long-distance relationship or marriage when a friend, her bassist, Mark Childers, offered to introduce her to his Canadian pal. Later during a VH1 Behind the Music interview, the singer joked about the setup.

She noted how dating was difficult for her by finding a Canadian hockey player who lived in another country! The person Childers wanted to introduce the country singer to was Mike Fisher, a National Hockey League star.

Underwood, who lived in Franklin, Tennessee, at the time, was skeptical about going on a blind date with someone who lived that far. She also feared that meeting him could be awkward, so she set the perfect date.

The country music star asked to meet with Mike backstage at one of her concerts. The meeting was casual and surprisingly worthwhile as the pair’s physical chemistry was alive and well.

After meeting with Mike, then 28, Underwood, then 25, texted Childers describing the athlete as super hot. The Ottawa Senators player was also taken by the musician and said she was “more beautiful in person than on TV.”

Things became so serious between Underwood and Mike that on December 20, 2009, the athlete proposed to his girlfriend at his home. The songstress agreed, and the duo texted family and friends with the happy news.

Mike confessed to the Toronto Sun the day after his proposal: “It’s true. We’re both obviously excited and very happy.” On July 10, 2010, the couple married on Lake Oconee, Georgia, at the Ritz-Carlton resort, with Underwood’s father walking her down the aisle.

Surprisingly, Underwood wasn’t that keen to have children with her husband. The star once confessed that she was never “a kid person” and was also not great with other people’s children with her questioning:

However, things changed five years after their marriage, when on February 27, 2015, Mike and Underwood became first-time parents with the arrival of their son, Isaiah Michael. The singer admitted that she had a change of heart when she welcomed her son.

She realized she was instantly in love with little Isaiah. With the singer’s busy schedule, Isaiah had to travel on tour with her when he was four, but when she got a chance, the country musician would stop by fun establishments like Sesame Place.

Underwood tried her best to be an average parent and balance her family life with her career. In 2016, the Grammy Award winner explained how things were the same for her as any other family.

She said she was trying to figure out how to balance things and be a good parent. The star shared how her job was “kind of weird” and that she spent much time away from home.

However, raising Isaiah unconventionally wasn’t easy, with Underwood stating, “I felt a little bad that he doesn’t have ‘normal’ babyhood.” The season 4 “American Idol” winner shared how she got over the guilt:

“My friend told me I needed to cut myself some slack and said, ‘God gave him to you, and he knows what you do.’ Once she said that, I was like, this is the way it’s supposed to be, and I should not worry so much.”

Mike’s wife explained how she gave motherhood and her entertainment career all her energy. She hoped things would be okay, and so far, they were, with her revealing that they were figuring it out as they went.

After being blessed with a child, Underwood sadly suffered three miscarriages while trying to have a second baby. She confessed that she waited for “things to stop hurting” but allowed herself to feel the loss and connected her to others who experienced the same thing, adding:

“I will always mourn those children, those lives that were a shooting star, a breath of smoke. At the time, it was awful, and it still hurts, but it’s kind of like, ‘OK, I have this.’”

WELCOMING THEIR SECOND CHILD

After losing so many children, Underwood and Mike tried once more. The former hockey player came to his wife one day and told her that they would have another child, and it would be a boy, whom they’d name Jacob.

The country musician was skeptical about his faith and asked how he knew. At the time, Mike had been wrestling with the whole thing and became honest with God about his desires.

He explained how he sensed God telling him they would have another child before giving his name. Underwood and her husband learned the significance of the name Jacob in the Bible, with Mike stating:

“The story of Jacob [is that] he wrestled with God through the night, and he wouldn’t let him go until he got his blessing.”

The former athlete explained how he and his wife weren’t demanding God give them the blessing and were being honest. True to Mike’s premonition, the couple welcomed a second son, Jacob Bryan.

On her Instagram account on January 23, 2019, Underwood shared three images at the hospital to announce the newborn baby’s birth. She revealed that he’d arrived in the early morning and that his family couldn’t be happier to have him.

The family thanked God for trusting them with taking care of Jacob, whom she described as a “little miracle.” The musician revealed their hearts were full and their eyes tired, but their lives were changed forever.

Over the years, she’s given her fans glimpses of her motherhood journey. In June 2019, Underwood shared an adorable Instagram photo of her during a Cry Pretty Tour 360 soundcheck which featured Isaiah holding a microphone.

She said she loved her job and described it as a day to bring your child to work. In September 2021, the star uploaded two Instagram images and a video of Isaiah making his baseball debut.

Mike’s wife admitted that she became more nervous watching him play, just as she had with her husband when he played hockey. However, she was proud of him and impressed that he could hit well.

For 2021’s Halloween, Underwood shared a photo of her family of four dressed up for the holiday. She jokingly noted in her post that she didn’t know what the three people in the picture were supposed to be.

In May 2022, the singer uploaded a cute photo of her sons showing off their Reflection jackets written with their mother’s name. The star revealed that she’d return to Resorts World Las Vegas in 2023.

Even though Underwood faced challenges as a working mother, she still enjoyed it. She once told People magazine that her life on the road with Mike and their children was “a big awesome mess,” adding:

“There is a thing about motherhood that makes you feel like, ‘Okay, if I can do that, I can do anything.’ And I feel like I’m a little older, a little wiser. This isn’t my first rodeo.”

The country musician often joked about her husband being on baby duty during the trips. She revealed that his responsibilities included taking care of their boys’ lavatory requirements!
