UPDATE: Grammy winner and international icon Celine Dion is “working hard,” but “doesn’t have control over her muscles,” her sister Claudette has told Canadian media. Dion earlier this year canceled all tour dates through 2024 due to a rare neurological disease called Stiff-Person Syndrome.

Claudette, however, sounded a somewhat positive note: “In our dreams and hers, the goal is to return to the stage. In what capacity? I don’t know.”

She continued, “The vocal cords are muscles, and the heart is also a muscle. This is what gets me. Because it’s a one out of a million case, the scientists haven’t done that much research because it hasn’t affected that many people.”

Family charity Fondation Maman Dion has been inundated with messages of support for the star. Said Claudette, “Some people have lost hope because it’s an illness that isn’t well known. If you knew the number of phone calls the Foundation receives about Celine! People tell us they love her and are praying for her.”

PREVIOUS, Sept. 1: Singer and international superstar Celine Dion, who earlier this year canceled all tour dates through 2024 due to a rare neurological disease called Stiff-Person Syndrome, continues to suffer uncontrollable and painful muscle spasms, her sister tells a Canadian publication.

In a new interview with Hello! Canada magazine, Claudette Dion called her sister “a strong woman” who is “doing everything to recover” from the illness, but with no known cure the family can do little but hope medical researchers evetually “find a remedy for this awful illness.”

“It’s an illness we know so little about,” Claudette Dion tells the publication. “There are spasms – they’re impossible to control. You know who people often jump up in the night because of a cramp in the leg or the calf? It’s a bit like that, but in all muscles. There’s little we can do to support her, to alleviate her pain.”

Stiff-Person Syndrome is a rare, progressive neurological disorder that causes muscle stiffness in the torso, arms and legs. The rare condition strikes about one in a million people.

The Grammy-winning “My Heart Will Go On” singer disclosed the diagnosis in December 2022 when she canceled European tour dates scheduled for February 2023. In May of this year, she canceled the entire 2023-2024 tour.

The Las Vegas-based singer has largely remained out of the public spotlight since making the cancelation announcement on Instagram in May.
