A nightclubber in Sheffield was subjected to a torrent of homophobic abuse as he waited in line to get into one of the city’s gay bars.

South Yorkshire Police are now appealing for the man pictured to come forward in the hope he might be able to help them in their investigation. The force are treating the attack as a hate crime.

In a public appeal, a force spokesperson has described how a man was waiting in the queue for Dempseys in Hereford Street, Sheffield, at 3.50am on December 30, when he was approached by a stranger. The stranger then started hurling homophobic abuse and derogatory language at him.

When the abuser was asked to leave, he refused and stayed hanging around outside for a few minutes before leaving the scene.

Today, the force released a picture of a man they would like to speak to. In a statement, a spokesman said: “Officers in Sheffield have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection to a hate crime in the city centre.

“A man approached queue barriers outside Dempseys on Hereford Street in Sheffield and used homophobic and derogatory language towards a man. It is then reported that the man was asked to move away from the barriers but refused and remained outside Dempseys for several minutes before leaving the area.

“Enquiries are ongoing but officers are keen to identify the man in the images as they may be able to assist us.”

The man they want to speak to is described as having black short hair and facial hair and being around 20 to 30 years old.
