Couple with Down Syndrome Fall in Love at First Sight, 5 Years Later They’re Still in Love despite Many Obstacles

A couple with Down Syndrome didn’t let anything, including a global pandemic, stop them from their decision to tie the knot and spend the rest of their lives together. They continue to go strong even years later, inspiring the world with genuine love and unswerving commitment.

Heidi Crowter and James Carter first met in 2017 and felt an instant connection and undeniable chemistry after the first few rounds of casual chatting. It didn’t take them long to realize that they were deeply, madly, and irrevocably in love with each other—a love they happily sealed with a kiss.

After being in a relationship for a year, the couple decided to take things to the next level. However, before they could move ahead, they needed their family on board, and for this reason, James assured Heidi he would ask for her father’s permission before marrying her.

Convincing Her Parents

Heidi was thrilled at the prospect of spending the rest of her mortal life with her beloved boyfriend. Much to her delight, James succeeded in winning over her parents and what followed next was nothing short of a fairytale romance.

She said she was overwhelmed with indescribable emotions when she saw her groom standing at the altar.

After seeking approval from her father, James surprised his lover with a romantic proposal at her favorite restaurant. While he was already aware of her answer, it still made him weak in the knees when Heidi agreed, and her eyes sparkled with love and joy.

With everything going as planned, the lovebirds couldn’t wait to begin the most exciting chapter of their lives. They mapped out everything with their loved ones’ support and were delighted to have a wedding day that would forever stay etched in their memories.

Social Isolation

Sadly, their epic wedding plans were ruined when COVID-19 resulted in the world going into lockdown. With travel restrictions and social distancing measures imposed in the U.K., Heidi and James had to spend three months apart, with the former in Coventry and the latter staying with his family in Weymouth.

It was a challenging period for the lovers who wanted to be together more than anything else. Their social isolation phase started in March 2020 and brought along sheer uncertainty, fear, bouts of loneliness, and longing.

Eternalizing Their Love

When nothing changed over time, something tugged at Heidi’s heartstrings, and Heidi decided to write a letter to the Prime Minister at the time, Boris Johnson, requesting to see if the lockdown could be relaxed and the ban on weddings could be lifted.

Fortunately, Johnson permitted people to hold scaled-down ceremonies with a reduced guest list and social distancing rules in place—a piece of news that came as a breath of fresh air for Heidi. Thereafter, on July 4, 2020, Heidi, 25, married James, 26, in a small wedding ceremony in Hillfields Church, Coventry.

The Bride’s Reaction

The couple’s marriage took place under strict COVID-19 protocols; even the number of guests was reduced to 30 from 220. While Heidi admitted that she couldn’t have her dream wedding, it still turned out to be the most special day of her life.

She said she was overwhelmed with indescribable emotions when she saw her groom standing at the altar. “I nearly started crying because James looked so handsome in his suit. I had dreamed of that moment since I was born,” added Heidi.

The Groom’s Response

Meanwhile, James confessed that he was equally thrilled to see his beautiful bride in her wedding gown and would never forget how he felt that day. “Watching [Heidi] walk down the aisle was the highlight of the day. She looked so amazing,” recalled James.

Liz Crowter, Heidi’s mother, recollected that there was no dry eye in the house as her daughter wed the love of her life. Although the then-newlyweds weren’t pleased about not being allowed to sing hymns at the wedding, what mattered the most was that they had a lifetime together to compensate for the lost opportunities.

Happy to Be Together

More than anything, Heidi and James were glad they tied the knot on the wedding date they had initially planned, even if things didn’t turn out according to their expectations. They also said they would have a bigger celebration once the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

According to sources, the adorable couple’s wedding was streamed online and seen by more than 11,000 viewers. The pandemic not only impacted their wedding but also called for a change in their honeymoon—they had to cancel Italy and settle for a relaxing time in Coventry.

Favorite TV Series

After having known each other for five years and being married for two years, the pair continues to go strong and has survived the highs and lows of life. Per Heidi, they live in a flat and have a carer, Jay, who is a wonderful human being and prepares delicious food.

The couple, who say they live independently and are happy and very much in love even today, enjoy watching the BBC TV series “Ralph & Katie.” Like them, the show’s lead characters have Down syndrome, and the story centers around their first year as newlyweds.

Highlighting the Positive Side

Heidi noted that she and her husband loved when Ralph brought flowers for Katie at work and how they always patched up after arguments. She said the show was a welcome respite and showed people that there was a positive aspect to Down syndrome too. Heidi mentioned:

“Before now, every show we have seen about Down’s syndrome is always negative. It makes us feel like we aren’t valued….We feel that this programme shows everyone that our lives are valuable.”

Heidi, an advocate for people with Down syndrome, often raises her voice about disability equality, and has also written a book, “I’m Just Heidi,” that encapsulates her life, James’ story, and their incredible love story.
