Dakota Johnson’s Parents, Siblings and Half-Siblings — Who Are They?

One of the reasons Dakota Johnson is such a talented actress with outstanding performances in Hollywood films and TV series is her famous family.

Born in Texas in October 1989, Dakota Johnson debuted as an actress in 1999’s “Crazy in Alabama” but shot to stardom with “21 Jump Street” and the “Fifty Shades” film series. Now, she is playing Anne Elliot in “Persuasion.”

Based on Jane Austen’s 1817’s novel, the Netflix adaptation gives the story a new subversively comedic take that immediately drew Dakota to the project. Here’s everything you need to know about Dakota’s famous family.

WHO ARE DAKOTA JOHNSON’S PARENTS?

Dakota might be the most famous member of the Johnson family nowadays, but that was not always the case. Her dad, Don Johnson, is an actor, producer, and director best known as Sonny Crockett in the 1980s TV series “Miami Vice.” 

In 1996, Don was cast as the title character in “Nash Bridges,” a role he held for six seasons until the show’s finale in 2001. In 1976, before achieving worldwide fame, Don married and divorced Melanie Griffith.

Melanie is also an actress and producer who shot to stardom for her outstanding portrayal of Tess McGill in “Working Girl.” Griffith’s part won her a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination.

Don and Melanie reunited and married in 1989, but they parted ways in 1996. Don moved on and tied the knot with Kelley Phleger in 1999, and Melanie did the same and married actors Steven Bauer and Antonio Banderas.

WHO ARE DAKOTA JOHNSON’S SIBLINGS AND HALF-SIBLINGS?

Dakota might be Don and Melanie’s only child, but she has six half-siblings. She has three brothers and one sister on her dad’s side and a brother and a sister on her mom’s side.

Jesse Johnson is Dakota’s eldest brother. Born in December 1982, the “Gun Shy” actor is Don and Patti D’Arbanville’s only son. Although he has been an actor for over two decades, he has not had a breakthrough role yet.

Dakota got full support from Don and Melanie until she graduated high school.

Don and his current wife, Kelley Phleger, share three kids. The eldest is Grace Johnson, a model under the IMG Models management born in December 1999. Her runway debut came in the 2019 Christian Cowan x The Powerpuff Girls fashion show, but she already participated in the Met Gala. 

Kelley and Don’s youngest kids are Jasper and Deacon Johnson, born in June 2002 and April 2006. Unlike their famous family members, the boys are into the entertainment industry.

Dakota’s siblings on Melanie’s side are Alexander Bauer (son of Steve Bauer) and Stella Del Carmen Banderas (daughter of Antonio Banderas). 

Stella is the only one with a career in showbiz. Born in Marbella, Spain, in September 1996, Stella appeared in “Crazy in Alabama” alongside her parents. She founded Lightbound, a company that sells handcrafted products to nourish the “soul, body, and earth.” 

WHY DID DAKOTA JOHNSON’S FAMILY CUT HER OFF FINANCIALLY?

Having wealthy parents makes certain things more accessible, and Dakota got full support from Don and Melanie until she graduated high school and was financially cut off.

Don explained that he always knew Dakota wanted to be an actress. However, he has a rule for his children: they must study to receive financial help.

When Dakota was about to finish high school, Don offered her to visit universities. She replied she wouldn’t go to college, so Don informed her she would no longer be on his payroll.

About three weeks later, Dakota booked a role in “The Social Network.” The rest is history. We cannot wait to see her in “Persuasion” alongside Cosmo Jarvis, Richard Grant, and Nikki Amuka-Bird.
