Timothée Chalamet’s “Dune” was so successful and exceeded so many expectations that “Dune 2” was already announced, and they added an Oscar-winning actor to the already star-studded cast.

Released in October 2021, “Dune: Part One” focuses on Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his family as they fight a war for the desert planet Arrakis. Since the film was released in theaters and HBO Max simultaneously, box-office expectations were low.

However, “Dune: Part One” made $41 million over the opening weekend and $400 worldwide in seven months. Three weeks after it was released, Warner Bros. and Legendary announced the sequel, and other talented actors joined the story.

“DUNE 2” NEW CAST DETAILS REVEALED

“Dune: Part One” main stars were Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Josh Brolin. But on May 12, 2022, “The Deer Hunter” star Christopher Walken was announced as Emperor Shaddam IV in “Dune 2.”

The Oscar, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild award-winning actor worked on two seasons of the critically-acclaimed Amazon Studios TV series “The Outlaws” and in Apple’s “Severance” before joining the “Dune 2” cast.

Denis Villeneuve will return as director, producer, and screenwriter. Jon Spaihts, who helped Villeneuve write and produce the first film, is coming back as co-writer.

Walken was not the only high-profile actor hired for the sequel. “Blackwidow” star Florence Pugh and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” actor Austin Butler will also be part of the project.

WHAT WILL “DUNE 2” BE ABOUT?

“Dune: Part One” received many Oscar awards and nominations and was considered among the best sci-fi films of the decade, but making it was not easy.

Villeneuve admitted [“Dune 2”] would be a more challenging film to make.

It is an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 eponymous novel, and Villeneuve knew he needed to break the 800-page story into two parts. His decision paid off. The first film ended on a cliffhanger, so the sequel will pick the story up where we left off.

Without spoiling anything about “Dune 2,” Paul (Timothée Chalamet) will continue his journey, learn more about the Fremen culture, and eventually rebel against Emperor Shaddam IV (Walken).

The sequel will be more about Paul’s journey against the enemy, mainly because the second half of Herbert’s book has a more plot-driven story. Still, Villeneuve said it will be “more cinematic.”

WHEN TO EXPECT THE “DUNE 2” RELEASE?

“Dune 2” – also known as “Dune: Part Two” – is expected to start production in Fall 2022. Villeneuve admitted it would be a more challenging film to make.

Fortunately, the movie is “mostly designed” and the screenplay is already written. Villeneuve will also work with the same crew, and they know what to do and how things are supposed to look.

Villeneuve’s primary concern is the pandemic, but if everything pans out, fans can expect to watch “Dune 2” in October 2023. The sequel is expected to have an exclusive theatrical release, so HBO Max will not have it available for streaming right away. We cannot wait!
