More than half a million struggling families in Yorkshire are due a direct payment of £300 to help ease the cost of living crisis this autumn – and our map shows how many will benefit where you live.

Households on means-tested benefits will automatically receive £300 between October 31 and November 19, the Department for Work and Pensions says. That amounts to more than £2.4 billion in funding provided to families across the UK.

In Yorkshire, £163.3 million is being shared out among 544,500 households. Leeds has the highest number of households eligible for the pay-out (99,800), meaning that £29.9m will be handed out to struggling families in the area.

But when compared to the size of the population, residents of Bradford also most likely to benefit. Nearly half of all households in that area (44%) are set to receive £300.

Households could be eligible for this payment if they are in receipt of benefits including Universal Credit, Pension Credit, and older benefits such as Jobseekers Allowance and Income Support. The handout is the second of three cost of living payments adding up to £900. The next will be made in Spring 2024.

A separate payment of £150 was also made to 6.7m disabled people last summer, while more than eight million pensioners will receive an extra £300. All payments will be made automatically to eligible households, there is no need to apply.

Mel Stride, the Work and Pensions Secretary, said: “The best way we can boost bank balances is by bearing down on inflation, but as we get there, we are ensuring the most vulnerable households are cushioned from high prices with a further Cost of Living payment.”

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt added: “Halving inflation and getting price rises under control is the best way to support households struggling with their bills. But it is also right that we are helping the most vulnerable in our society.”
