Full Story

Dwyane Wade and his wife Gabrielle Union have been vocal supporters of LGBTQ+ rights for years, and they have especially been advocates for their 15-year-old daughter Zaya Wade who is trans. In a recent interview, Dwyane discussed how his father taught him to be supportive of Zaya, and why they chose to move their family out of Florida due to new anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

During an interview on Showtime’s “Headliners with Rachel Nichols,” Dwyane revealed that when Zaya first came out as trans, he had to “educate himself” about the LGBTQ+ community. Despite losing some friends in the process, Dwyane never wavered on supporting and loving his children. He credited his own father for setting an example of how to be an amazing dad and accept all children regardless of their background.

However, the family ultimately decided to move out of Florida due to the state’s new anti-trans laws. Dwyane explained that he had to make decisions for his family, not just personal individual ones, and that his family would not feel accepted or comfortable there. While Wade has a deep connection to Florida, having played for the Miami Heat for many years, his family’s wellbeing was a priority.

In an interview with Dazed, Zaya explained that having a platform allowed her to reach more people but it also meant receiving more hate and transphobia. Despite the negativity, Zaya is determined to use her platform to inspire trans people around the world to live with themselves without fear.

Dwyane and Gabrielle’s blended family includes Dwyane’s nephew Dahveon, sons Zaire and Xavier, and daughter Kaavia. The family’s advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and support for Zaya’s journey continues to serve as an inspiration to many.
