November has been unseasonably mild so far but temperatures are soon forecast to plummet as weather maps forecast a blast of snow is on the way.

Freezing Arctic winds are expected to come from the north in the coming weeks that will send temperatures plummeting as we head into December, with mercury readings predicted to drop as low as -7C in some parts of the UK.

Scotland is likely to see the worst of the cold front, with widespread snowfall spanning a 436-mile radius from Inverness to Reading.

Weather maps from WXCharts show that snowfall is possible as early as November 29, while Wales and Northern Ireland could be swamped with rain, the Express reports.

The charts indicated that snow is likely to continue into next month, with up to 50cm falling in Scotland on December 3.

The change in conditions means December is on course to be a particularly chilly month, particularly during the second half, meaning Brits could possibly see a white Christmas.

James Madden from Exacta Weather said: “It is now increasingly likely that we will see at least one to two notable wintry blasts from late November and into the first half of December, but it may turn milder or much milder later.

“However, a sudden stratospheric warming event from later this month and into December could change that outlook to an even colder and more wintry theme for many parts of the country, and would drastically change the overall outlook for December as a whole, particularly, during the second half of the month, and increasing our white Christmas chances significantly under such circumstances.”

Meanwhile, the Met Office has said December will bring “predominantly changeable” weather, with spells of rain, showers and winds.

The Met Office outlook for November 25 to December 4 states that while temperatures will be colder than average across the UK, with widespread morning frost, conditions will be largely dry and settled.

The national forecaster said: “The early part of next week is most likely to be characterised by light winds and a mixture of wetter, cloudier conditions and colder, brighter and drier conditions, before winds from a broadly northwesterly direction become more established.

“These leading to periods of wet or showery weather focussed in the northwest of the UK, and largely dry weather elsewhere. Temperatures overall are most likely to be just a little colder than average, with only a very small chance of something much colder and wintry developing from mid to late next week.”

As for early December, the Met Office warns that the weather will become more “changeable and unsettled” in this period, “with wetter and windier than average conditions likely, especially in the west and northwest.”

The forecaster adds: “Generally temperatures are expected to be near or above average, although short-lived colder interludes remain possible.”
