Georgie Stone said that she didn’t know Neighbours was ending until she read about it on Twitter.
The news that Channel 5 was canceling Neighbours got out in the UK media on February 5 in the evening, which was Sunday morning in Australia. Some of the cast members of the show seemed surprised by the news.
Later, the cast and crew were told that what the media said was true and that the show would end on June 10. The cast got together to talk about the bad news.
Georgie, who plays Mackenzie Hargreaves, told Digital Spy exclusively about the end of Neighbours, “It’s a real shame. I felt very sad.
“I first heard the news online, on Twitter. I didn’t know if it was true or not until one of the producers called me and told me it was.
“It’s not fun to lose your job and find out about it on social media.
“I think I was going to leave the show at some point this year anyway, but it made me sad that young actors wouldn’t be able to have this experience on the show in the future.”
Digital Spy has heard that the Neighbours team was told in 2021 that Channel 5 had only agreed to a one-year contract renewal, which was much shorter than previous extensions, and that the future of the show was uncertain after that.
When Channel 5 finally decided to cancel the show, the news got out before the cast could be told.
Georgie also said this about Neighbours: “I don’t know where I’d be without it. I wouldn’t have all the great knowledge and love for this job that I have now.
“I also felt bad for the crew and the actors, for whom this was their home for decades.
“I’m sad for the fans, too, because they’ve spent so many years on this beautiful show, which still has so much life in it. It’s too bad that it’s ending.”
The last day of filming for Neighbours was last week, and the last episode will air on August 1.
Recent UK episodes focused on the sad death of Hendrix Greyson and Mackenzie’s grief afterward. Fans have praised the show for ending on a high note, saying that it went out on a high note.
Neighbours is on Channel 5 and My5 every weekday at 1:45 and 6 p.m. The show airs in Australia Monday through Thursday at 6:30 p.m. on 10 Peach and can be streamed on 10 Play.
