Then, with help from his friends, he learned how to film and put together short films that he had written along the way. Doohan believed that learning to produce and direct were essential skills. He added:

“I think every young actor should be doing that. It’s where I learned the most and it gave me a chance to show people what I could do.”

Doohan’s educational background was fascinating. He went to Los Angeles for a summer internship with casting director Elizabeth Barnes instead of enrolling at Oklahoma University for a bachelor’s degree in theater.
