Laura confessed that on the first meeting, she found George cute and enjoyed that he liked to talk because she wanted to listen. For George’s part, he was immediately attracted to Laura. He admitted:

“The moment I saw Laura’s blue eyes, I felt heart palpitations. She was a beautiful, stately woman. A little shy but very engaging.”

The couple dated for three months. Laura was teaching in Austin, and George went to visit her. He was staying in a rental house while visiting his sweetheart, which was a memorable visit for them both.

Although they had only recently met and fallen in love, George was confident that Laura was the one for him, and Laura felt the same. George’s trip to Austin was partly to close the distance between them and somewhat to ask a big question.

On that trip to Austin, George asked Laura to marry him. Laura said that the proposal didn’t come as a surprise to her. She shared:

“I knew George was going to ask. I didn’t have to think twice about it. I said yes right away.”

Talking to his daughter about his marriage to her mother, he told her that he was a very decisive person and knew right away that he wanted to marry Laura, which is why he wasted no time proposing.

When asked what made him decide to marry Laura, George revealed that, among other things, her blue eyes won him over. The couple was engaged and married in the same year.

The couple has been together ever since and has shared an exciting life. With George being the former president of the USA and the pair starting their own family, there has been much talk about the family over the years.

George and Laura Expanded Their Family

Shortly after they got married, George and Laura expanded their family. In 1981, the couple welcomed twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara. In 2001, the girls’ father became president, but they were not pleased.

When George came into office in 2001, his daughters were 20 years old and not at all excited by the fact that their father would be running the country. In fact, they tried to veto his presidency before it began.

The girls learned of their dad’s desire to run for office two years before he assumed the role when they were 18. Talking about the event, Jenna revealed why they didn’t like the idea. She confessed:

“I think, like normal 18-year-olds, we really wanted to enjoy college and grow and make mistakes, which we did. But I think pretty fast, pretty soon into his tenure, we realized how awesome it is to live history and how lucky we really were and are.”

Despite the fact that George’s parents were the former president and first lady and the fact that he and Laura later assumed the same roles, Jenna and Barbara lived a largely normal life. Jenna has often spoken about what it was like to grow up a Bush.

She revealed that when she and her sister were younger, they did a couple of things with their grandmother and grandfather as they understood they had “big jobs,” but they didn’t do as much with their father.

Jenna said that while they attended election night when their father took over the presidency, they did not participate in anything leading up to the election. Their father was okay with that. She also said that he told his daughters they could be normal even though he was president.

George and Laura Are Grandparents

Jenna got married to her husband, Henry Hager, in 2008. She then welcomed her first daughter, Margaret, in 2013. Margaret now goes by the name “Mila.” Two years later, the couple welcomed another baby into their family.

Jenna and Henry’s second daughter, Poppy, was born in 2015. In 2019, Jenna announced that they were expecting their third child together. This time, they welcomed a baby boy named Hal into the family.

Talking about why she was telling the world about her pregnancy, Jenna revealed there was a specific reason. She admitted:

“I’m only telling because Mila and Poppy found out yesterday in their Easter baskets. They told the man behind me on the airplane; they told the people at church.”

Although she said that baby Hal wasn’t planned, she assured fans that she and Henry were happy to expand their family again, and her daughters were thrilled that they got to be big sisters.

George’s other daughter, Barbara, was also married in 2018 but took longer to start her family than her sister. However, in 2021, Barbara’s long-awaited bundle of joy was finally welcomed into the fold.

Although Jenna often spoke about how much she loved being a mother, she also talked about her guilt when she fell pregnant, knowing that her sister was trying to fall pregnant, too, without any luck.

This is why Jenna was ecstatic when her sister finally welcomed her baby in 2021. Barbara’s daughter, Cora, was born happy and healthy in September 2021. The Bush family shared their excitement at the addition to the family with many media outlets at the time.

While Laura and George now have four grandchildren, George has often spoken about how he felt to find out that he would be a grandfather for the first time. When Mila was born, he said:

“It’s awesome, I mean just awesome. And it’s such a joy, and it’s the beginning of a new chapter in our lives to be grandparents.”

Laura and George love being grandparents and have even said that their grandchildren’s own parents get trampled by George and Laura as they rush to be with their grandchildren. George also told Bill Clinton to be ready to fall in love again when he met his first grandchild.

Laura also shared that she felt grandchildren were the “reward for old age.” George and Laura have also carried on a family tradition with their grandchildren. Laura said that they got the tradition from George’s parents.

The tradition is that when the grandchildren stay at George and Laura’s house, they love for them to come into their bedroom in the morning as they wake up and get into bed with them. Laura said the children go into hers and George’s bed before their parents are awake.

George’s grandchildren even have a cute nickname for their grandfather. They call him “el jefe,” which means “the boss.” However, his natural demeanor with his grandchildren couldn’t be further from that of a boss.

George revealed that he indulged his grandchildren in anything they wanted, including candy and video games. He admitted:

“I’m probably undermining every lesson that Jenna and Henry are trying to teach little Mila but, you know, what the heck?”

George and Laura spend as much time as possible with their children as they now live a much quieter life. The couple enjoys having their grandchildren in their home and also enjoys taking them out from time to time.
