At the age of only five, a little girl faced unspeakable experiences. She was placed in the foster care system and believed her mother would come back for her, but she changed that dream for something better one day.

Kyrsten Roberts vividly remembers the day her life changed irrevocably. In 1998, the five-year-old was taken from her biological family after several incidents proved they could not care for her.

Roberts often ate peanut butter for dinner while her sisters shoplifted to access their basic needs. Police reported that the children were neglected and would spend days alone at home without adult supervision.

“MY MOM IS COMING BACK FOR ME”

When the authorities led Roberts away from her house, she recalled that her mom was crying, but she didn’t understand why. Roberts soon realized that her life in foster care had begun, and she struggled to accept it.

She told the other kids her stay in the facility was not permanent. Roberts said: “This is just my daycare. My mom is coming back for me.”

FORGOTTEN IN THE SYSTEM

Roberts spent many nights crying about the situation, and she dreamed about going home to her family. Life in foster care was not easy, and she was traumatized by various encounters, which eventually left her depressed.

“I spent 7 years in this foster home and was never put up for adoption because my mom’s rights were never relinquished. I was forgotten about in the system.”

SHE FELT UNADOPTABLE

In the consequent years, the teenager started to feel “unadoptable” and unworthy of love. As a 21-year-old, she thought her chances of adoption were non-existent, but something unexpected happened after she attended nanny school.

She reached out to one of her friends from class when she needed a place to stay for a few days. The family was happy to host her, and after some time, they realized something extraordinary had happened.

SHE GOT HER FOREVER HOME

The family wanted to adopt Roberts. A few days in their home turned into a legal adoption, and Roberts stated: “On March 27, 2015, at the age of 22, I was legally adopted. I got my forever family after all those years in foster care.”

She thanked God for answering her prayers and expressed that he did not forget about her. After the adoption, she started a journey of healing because there were many things she needed to deal with. She never gave up and said

“God has restored my heart in unimaginable ways … Keep fighting for the life you want!”

ANOTHER FAMILY ADOPTED AN ADULT

Unfortunately, children face trauma and abuse in the families supposed to take care of them. Annie Marek-Barta experienced many bad moments living in foster care.

She dreamed about being adopted by a loving family, but she was still waiting when she was in her twenties. In 2019, a couple told her: “We would adopt you,” and she finally heard the words she always longed for.

Children like Annie and Roberts just want someone to love them. Thankfully, both were adopted into forever homes that treated them with care and consideration.
