A young schoolgirl was always known for her preference for wearing clothes made for boys. However, when she decided to wear a suit to her school’s prom, the institution rejected her, citing religious beliefs.

Aniya Wolf has been wearing clothes made for boys and like a boy since she was a little girl. Speaking to a publication in May 2016, the student revealed that her preference came from being more masculine than other girls.

She revealed how she was never caught playing with toys meant for girls, like Barbie dolls. For three years of attendance at Bishop McDevitt, Aniya always got away with wearing pants and a shirt for her school uniform.

However, her family said things changed about the dress code without notice when they received a last-minute email from the school that revealed how girls would have to wear dresses to the prom. The student’s mother, Carolyn Wolf, called the school, saying:

“I told them that I had read the dress code that was given to the students, and I didn’t think that it precluded her from wearing a suit.”

Aniya’s mother told the school that it was unfair to instill the new rule, especially since it was done at the last minute. The parent had already gone out and bought a suit for her daughter, whom she described as “beautiful” in it.

The student had also looked forward to prom night for quite some time and even shared the response her mother received from the school. Taking to Twitter, the young girl revealed how the school noted that it was “upsetting” for her attire not to be accepted.

They said they would refund her ticket if she didn’t want to attend but noted that wasn’t much consolation. The school also apologized for sharing such disappointing news but refused to budge from its stance.

On Facebook, Aniya addressed the matter, explaining how she lived out God’s teachings as a practicing Catholic. She said she loved her teachers as they’d given an excellent education and never judged her for how she presented.

The school gave her two dress code options, one was that dresses had to be formal, but it didn’t explicitly state that a dress was what she had to wear. That was the dress code her mother signed, and it didn’t exclude women from wearing suits.

Aniya also noted how past alums had also worn suits. However, other students didn’t get the emails about the prom dress code rules allegedly sent out on March 6 and 9, as she’d asked them to check, and they confirmed.

It appeared the prom dress code email Carolyn received was only sent to Aniya, demanding she wears a “formal dress.” She didn’t expect that wanting to attend prom in what she was comfortable with would lead to severe consequences and retaliation.

A School Official Threatened Aniya with Cops for Her Suit

On the prom day, Aniya decided to attend anyway, wearing her suit, and she was sadly thrown out! According to the student, a school official took hold of her arm and threatened to call the police.

Instead of making it a big deal, Carolyn’s daughter relented and left. However, she felt wronged by the whole situation and felt that while some dresses showed off a lot of skin, she believed she was dressed modestly.

Her school refused to address the matter with the media, and Aniya confessed to feeling accepted by other students. However, she felt school officials, on the other hand, made her feel like she was a “mistake.”

On Facebook, Carolyn’s daughter uploaded a picture of herself in her stunning suit and shared that she was forced to leave her prom. She revealed that the school’s principal was the one who threatened to call the police, adding:

“Lol, they can’t take my pride.”

The way the school chose to ostracize Aniya wasn’t okay, especially since they’d allowed her to represent the way she felt comfortable for years. Luckily, another solution presented itself to the student, allowing her to make her dream come true!

Aniya Dazzles in Her Suit at Prom in Another School

A day after Aniya was kicked out of her school’s prom, William Penn High School invited her to attend theirs! Talking to a publication as she got ready for the special occasion in her suit, she asked if her hair looked good.

The York City School District invited Carolyn’s daughter to their prom, and the student was touched, noting how amazing it was to realize that “many people cared.” Her mother said the invite was excellent, and it thrilled her to see Aniya all dressed up and that people were pleased to have her at the other prom.

The student was a junior in 2016 and admitted having to think it through if she’d stay at Bishop McDevitt the following year. On May 22, 2016, a photojournalist made coverage of Aniya attending prom at William Penn High School.
