A Couple’s Heartbreak

Their sorrowful tale began when their little daughter, Lola Ivy Winchcole, aged 20 months, was admitted to Beaudesert Hospital on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at around 8 p.m. due to severe breathing difficulties. Alarming concerns over her condition prompted her parents, Toni and Matthew Winchcole, to seek immediate medical attention as she battled the flu.

However, the distressing turn of events unfolded when doctors discharged Lola merely three hours after her admission, providing medication for her nausea. Despite receiving Panadol and Ondansetron at the hospital, her breathing remained alarmingly rapid and noisy, leaving her parents deeply worried.

“We were really concerned about Lola’s breathing because it just seemed a lot more rapid and noisy, like faster than usual… so they gave her Panadol at the hospital and [Ondansetron] to help with her nausea,” explained Toni.

Later, Matthew put his baby girl to sleep in her crib, utterly oblivious to what the next day would bring. Tragically, the following Sunday morning, he discovered Lola unresponsive in her bed, prompting an urgent rush to Logan Hospital. Despite valiant efforts by medical professionals to revive her through CPR, the little girl could not be saved.

Further compounding the family’s grief, the hospital staff allegedly revealed that Lola had contracted an infection known as Strep A, with traces of this deadly disease found in her blood. The distraught parents now demand answers from health authorities, eagerly awaiting the coroner’s findings to shed light on this devastating loss.

Toni, overcome with sorrow, described the experience as “awful” and nearly indescribable, emphasizing the profound tragedy of their situation. In a heartfelt plea to other parents, Matthew emphasized the importance of trusting their instincts regarding their children’s well-being. “It’s always right…you don’t want to come home to this nightmare,” expressed the distraught dad.

The Queensland Health Minister Shannon Fentiman expressed her heartfelt condolences to Lola’s grieving family, assuring them that the health service was actively reviewing the case.

Logan and Beaudesert Health Service’s acting executive director, Brett Bricknell, echoed their sympathies while highlighting that the matter remained under the coroner’s jurisdiction, making further information unavailable.

In their relentless pursuit of answers and justice, Toni and Matthew, who are also parents to a five-year-old girl, are now facing the unimaginable grief of losing their cherished daughter and the financial burdens that come with such a tragedy. To support this grieving family during their darkest hours, a GoFundMe campaign has been established.

As of September 13, the fundraiser has garnered AU$ 33,986 of its AU$ 50,000 goal, with additional contributions expected to pour in soon. Created by Jayme Brennan on behalf of Lola’s mother, Toni, the campaign aims to alleviate the family’s daily expenses and medical and funeral costs and provide crucial financial assistance as they take time off work to grieve and make sense of this devastating loss.
