Jake and his buddies made a bet that he should invite the ugly girl they graduated with to a party as a joke. However, they had no idea that the girl had some motorcycle-riding guardian angels.

“You won’t do it. You don’t have the guts,” Jake’s friend, Olly, laughed, and the others echoed the gleeful but evil humor.

“Please. This will be a piece of cake. She’s going to cry when I get in there,” Jake scoffed, grinning in confidence. He strolled toward the laundromat where a poor, unsuspecting girl was working her usual shift, not knowing that some idiots were planning something horrible.

Jake and his friends were bored. The truth is that they had peaked in high school as the typical jocks/bullies of everyone around. Now, they all worked boring jobs and gathered afterward to drink beers and reminisce about their lives.

They were walking around town when they passed the local laundromat and spotted someone from their graduating class: Daisy. Olly stopped them all and pointed her out. They laughed because they used to make fun of her for being an ugly girl. Then, he had an idea and told Jake to go in and invite her to a “party.”

At first, they all just laughed, but soon, the idea became a bet, and Jake was ready to win some money and have fun with his buddies, so he went inside.

“Why are you so happy?” he asked, knowing that the girl was never really that way.

“Hey, Daisy! Hello! I haven’t seen you since our graduation!” Jake greeted her with more enthusiasm than he had ever shown her.

“Uhmm… Jake? Ok, hello. Can I help you with something?” Daisy asked, confused. She worked at the laundromat since she was 15 because her family was incredibly poor. She didn’t mind. She loved them no matter what, but she wanted to work hard so they could soon have better lives.

Her shift at the laundromat was about to end, and she had to leave quickly due to her night classes at the local community college. Jake’s appearance was both unexpected and unwelcome. He and his friends had been nothing but terrible to everyone in high school.

“No, no. I just saw you and wanted to talk to you,” he replied, smiling as if he was James Dean.

“Why?” Daisy continued, shaking her head.

“Why not?” Jake wondered, faking offense. “Ok, look. I know I wasn’t the best person in high school, and I hate myself for it. How about I make that up to you at Olly’s party tomorrow.”

“Olly?” Daisy muttered, curling her lip imperceptive. Olly was even worse than Jake. “No, thanks.”

Jake’s eyebrows went up, shocked. “Look, please. I swear. I’ve been trying to change. I’m so sorry for whatever I did in high school. I know I was a jerk. I’m in therapy now, and I think you’re a really cool girl, actually. I always wondered about you…”

Jake rambled on, and Daisy didn’t want to believe his words, but his green eyes were pretty compelling.

There was a reason why those guys got away with anything. They were handsome, and they knew it. Jake had such charisma and knew how to get girls to swoon. Daisy was not too proud to admit that she sometimes admired him from afar and wanted to believe his words now.

“Please, Daisy. Please. Give me a chance to be a better person – a better man,” Jake finished, linking his hands and pouting his mouth.

Daisy finally had to giggle at his expression. “Ok, well. Fine. Text me Olly’s address,” she said timidly.

“Cool. Cool,” Jake responded, smiling and bringing out his phone. They talked a little bit more, and Jake finally said goodbye.

Daisy looked at his number on her phone and grinned, feeling butterflies in her stomach. She was so distracted that she didn’t hear the roar of laughter outside or notice that Jake’s friends had been there all this time.

But someone else did; a big man in a leather jacket and combat boots with a trimmed goatee and a fearsome expression. This man went to the laundromat all the time, and his friends did too. They had no time for laundry, so they always used this place. Daisy had known them for many years.

Jake and his goons walked away as the regular patron entered the laundromat and frowned at the smile on Daisy’s face.

“Hello, Mr. Bo!” she greeted with the brightest expression, which only made the man frown more.

“Why are you so happy?” he asked, knowing that the girl was never really that way.

“Oh, well… actually, there’s this boy…”

As her story continued, Mr. Bo’s frown deepened.

“Daisy, you’re here!” Jake said upon opening the door and hugged Daisy, ushering her inside.

“I wasn’t sure this was Olly’s house. There are no cars, and I don’t hear any music,” she said, frowning and looking around the quiet house.

Suddenly, Olly and the other guys appeared as Jake closed the front door forcefully. “Oh, well. This is more of a private party,” Jake said, and his words were technically ordinary, but there was something in his voice that made goosebumps rise on her skin.

“I didn’t know that,” Daisy said quietly, staring at the grinning faces of the guys she had gone to school with. But they were not friendly smiles. She knew that. She shouldn’t have gone there. She should’ve trusted her initial instincts. Her hands reached into her pocket for her phone, but Jake grabbed her arm.

Daisy giggled on her way out.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” he asked, his voice even, but something in it chilled her bones. She was about to scream when the roar of engines almost rumbled the house.

“What’s that?” Olly shouted, his eyebrows furrowed.

The rumble got closer, and Daisy realized what was happening. She pushed Jake away, caught by surprise because the noise had distracted them all, and opened the door, rushing outside quickly. She was right. It was Mr. Bo on his motorcycle, accompanied by five other men who knew her from the laundromat.

Mr. Bo got off his bike as Daisy reached him. “What happened in there, Daisy? Should I call the police?” he asked sensibly. But Daisy saw real anger in his eyes.

“Nothing happened. But it would’ve if you guys hadn’t come,” she said, swallowing thickly. “Can you please take me home?”

The men heard her words and frowned up at the house. Daisy saw Jake and his buddies closing the front door and turning off the lights quickly as if that would protect them. But all she wanted now was to leave.

“Ok, Daisy. I’ll take you home,” Mr. Bo said and gave her a helmet. The other bikers followed them to her house, and they said goodbye. Daisy’s parents also knew the guys and thanked them for bringing Daisy home, although she didn’t tell them the whole story.

The next day, Daisy thought it was over, but unexpectedly, Mr. Bo pushed through the laundromat doors, pulling Jake by his T-shirt collar. “Hey, Daisy. You have a surprise day off. This loser is going to work for you,” he announced, and Daisy smiled.

“What? Let me go! I’ll call my dad!” Jake protested, trying to get free, but Mr. Bo’s grip was solid. One look from him also made Jake shut up.

“Your boss knows already, honey. Go have some fun,” Mr. Bo continued, and Daisy smiled, removing her work apron and grabbing her things.

“Move it, boy,” Mr. Bo pushed Jake, and he was forced to comply.

Daisy giggled on her way out. It felt nice to have people looking out for her – her motorcycle-riding guardian angels. She heard the other guys taught Olly and the rest of the gang a lesson, too, but she didn’t ask.

What can we learn from this story?

  • People with evil intentions get what they deserve. Jake and his buddies planned something terrible to mock and hurt Daisy, but she had people looking out for her, and they all got what they deserved.
  • Trust your instincts at all times. Daisy shouldn’t have fallen for Jake’s words, knowing what she knew about them. But then, she did the right thing and acted quickly to get out of Olly’s house.
