The conversation centered around her directorial debut, “Bruised,” which explores the issue of abusive relationships, a topic that deeply resonates with the actress.

Halle spoke openly about the challenges she faced growing up with her father who struggled with alcoholism and was abusive towards her in various ways. She said the emotional and physical scars left by her father’s behavior affected her.

In a poignant Father’s Day Instagram post from a few years ago, she expressed her sadness over how his alcohol addiction had deprived them of the relationship they deserved to have.

Despite Jerome’s behavior, Halle expressed how much she missed him and still deeply loved him. When asked how she forgave her dad, who left her and her mother when she was three years old, she said she went through a lot of therapy.

The acclaimed actress revealed that after her father passed away, she received a special gift in the form of talking to a spiritual healer. Various spiritual exercises helped her heal the wounds she had from her father.

Halle shared that this experience allowed her to see her father in a different light and eventually realize that he had not received the love and guidance he needed as a child. She explained:

“He wasn’t born into the world an abusive, alcoholic man who was out of control. He became that by what he was and was not given; what he was exposed to and by what he wasn’t exposed to.”

Halle realized that her father was a victim of generational trauma, which began from her great-great-grandmother’s experience of having her daughters taken away during slavery.

She started to see him not just as an abusive and alcoholic man, but as an innocent boy raised by broken parents who did the best he could with the tools he was given.

Even though Jerome failed her and their family miserably, Halle now feels empathy and love for him, understanding that he turned to alcohol to numb his pain. This realization has brought her a sense of peace and closure.

Halle Has Talked about Her Dad Several Times in Interviews

Halle has publicly shared her story about Jerome multiple times, first in 2007. In addition to being violent towards Halle and her mother, she also revealed that her sister was also a victim of his abuse.

Although Halle’s father abandoned the family when she was only four years old, he returned to them by the time the actress was ten. Her mom thought his return would be best for their children.

But Jerome’s return meant something else. The Academy Award winner recounted witnessing her father subjecting her mother to mistreatment “day after day after day,” which included physical violence.

Halle also witnessed her sister suffer at Jerome’s hands and admitted feeling guilty and cowardly for failing to stop her abusive father. She said it was the “worst year” of her life.

Halle found it difficult to accept the abuse her mother and sister endured. She also struggled with the fact that she was spared from it, saying, “The hard part for me was that he never abused me.”

The movie superstar added that she spent many of her early years trying to make sense of everything, recover, and regain self-confidence. She spent over three decades going to therapy.

Halle Also Had a Difficult Period in Her Relationship with Her Mom

Halle had a difficult upbringing, as she not only suffered abuse from her father but also had a strained relationship with her mother, Judith. She recalled her experience in “The Jesse Cagle Interview” with People in 2017.

When Mother’s Day came around in 2022, Halle honored the occasion by sending a heartfelt shout-out to her beloved teacher on Instagram.

When Halle moved to New York City, she had some money from a modeling gig, but it didn’t last long. She contacted Judith for help, but she denied her request, causing a year-long rift in their relationship.

When Mother’s Day came around in 2022, Halle honored the occasion by sending a heartfelt shout-out to her beloved teacher on Instagram. She shared two photos showing how close they are despite the changes over the years.

The first photo featured an updated look for Halle, with a short haircut, blonde bangs, a green sweater, and minimal accessories. She was seen smiling alongside Yvonne, wearing a red shirt, matching coverup, and a necklace.

The second picture seemed to be taken several years ago. Yvonne wore a white and brown shirt topped with a denim jacket, while her cherished student was seen in a long-sleeved white shirt.
