During the housing crash, Tarek El Moussa and Christina Hall recognized it was a buyer’s market. So, they bought house in Orange County and got to renovating. According to Realtor, they ended up bringing in over $30,000 in profit after flipping their first place. This was all it took to get the ball rolling.

Later, at a conference, they met another agent who told them about a show called “House Flipping” that was looking for people, according to Good Housekeeping. Using a friend’s camera, El Moussa and Hall began filming their next project without getting their hopes up. “I just remember driving to an auction and thinking there’s just no way this is really going to happen,” Hall recalled. “Then, all of the sudden, HGTV wanted a pilot [later named ‘Flip or Flop’], and the pilot got picked up and it was a series, overnight.”

To find places to work on, El Moussa keep tabs on homes in the area that were up for auction, according to The Orange County Register. “I’ll buy any house, any condition (and) any location as long as I can get it at the right price,” El Moussa said. Needless to say, to make their TV show happen, they had to do a lot of work behind the scenes.
