The majority of Hillsborough Park is open for public use once again, after damage following the Tramlines Music Festival led to four months of fence lines and restrictions.

Some of the final fence lines have been removed after sections of the park were closed to the public following the festival which took place July 21-23.

Work has been ongoing to restore the much loved park to its usual quality, after three days of heavy rainfall over the festival weekend, combined with over 40,000 visitors, turned the park into a mud bath.

Performances were delayed and staff resorted to covering the park in straw, in order to make the site safe for fans, after torrential rain hit the festival overnight. Now the fence lines in the middle section of the park, between the main field and playing fields, have been removed to open up more space for the public to use once again.

Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “We know how important Hillsborough Park is to residents, which is why we have been working with Tramlines to restore the park to its usual high quality and return it for community use following this year’s Tramlines Music Festival.

“I am really pleased to see that the majority of the fence lines have now come down and most of the park is now open once again for public use.” Tramlines explained that because of the wet weather in recent weeks, two short lines of fencing will remain in place as a precautionary measure to prevent damage to waterlogged areas.

Repairs have included the removal of debris, removal of top layer of soil, raking and levelling, new topsoil and sand; re-seeding and fertiliser; aeration; heavy rolling; protection while existing grass recovers or new growth is established.

Cllr Williams said: “I remain confident that the Tramlines team will continue to carry out repairs to the highest standard so local people can enjoy the park to the fullest.”

Tramlines 2024 is still set to be held in Hillsborough Park, despite the disruption caused after this year’s event.
