How Did Teyana Taylor Get Famous? The Singer Has Been in the Spotlight since She Was a Teen

Teyana Taylor might be a successful singer, but her first contact with fame had nothing to do with music. Still, she has kept herself relevant in the entertainment industry since her teenage years.

Multi-awarded singer and dancer Teyana Taylor went through an emotional rollercoaster between late May and early June 2022. She won “The Masked Singer” but lost her half-brother, Fleeroy PC Mason, to cancer.

Taylor shared the tragic news on Instagram and admitted that she was broken and trying to process her brother’s death. Fleeroy had cancer, checked into the hospital in September 2021, and underwent multiple surgeries, but he could not survive.

TEYANA TAYLOR’S FAMILY LIFE

The “Gonna Love Me” singer pointed out that she was “not okay” following her brother’s death. She is probably leaning on her famous husband, NBA star Iman Shumpert, and her kids. 

Taylor and Shumpert married on October 1, 2016, less than a year after welcoming their first kid together, Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr. (best known as Junie).

Junie was born on December 16, 2015, and she is the spitting image of her mother. Taylor has shared multiple photos of her daughter on social media, showing her lovable personality.

The young girl seems to have inherited the music passion from her mother. During one of Taylor’s live shows in September 2018, Junie grabbed a mic, walked to the front of the stage, and sang in front of the crowd. Junie was only two years old, so she immediately stole the show.

Taylor and Shumpert’s youngest daughter, Rue, joined the family on September 6, 2020. Rue was born in the couple’s bathroom without hospital assistance, like her older sister.

HOW DID TEYANA TAYLOR GET FAMOUS?

Taylor has been famous since her teenage years. Although she is not the first celebrity to achieve fame as a teen, her case is entirely different. Her first contact with fame was on season four of MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16” in February 2007. 

Her 1980s old-school skateboard theme and New York City Barbie entrance made such an impact that her episode became an MTV classic.

Before mourning Fleecy’s passing, Taylor celebrated her victory on “The Masked Singer.”

However, Taylor began singing years before MTV made her famous. She would sing on trains to make money and stepped into a booth for the first time at seven. Pharrell Williams’ Star Trak Entertainment signed her at 15.

She left Williams’ record label in 2010 and met Kanye West, who asked her to do background vocals for “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.” 

Taylor joined West’s GOOD Music record label in 2012 and released her first album, “VII,” two years later, which made it to the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

TEYANA TAYLOR WON “THE MASKED SINGER”

Before mourning Fleecy’s passing, Taylor celebrated her victory in “The Masked Singer” season seven. The final three contestants were Prince, Firefly, and Ringmaster.

They all gave their best in two rounds, but Prince (Cheyenne Jackson) was the first eliminated. The final round was a close call, but Firefly (Taylor) won, making Ringmaster (Hayley Orrantia) the runner-up. Rest in peace, Fleecy.
