Huddersfield bakery Hadfields has announced price reductions of up to 26% on some of its products – just two months after fighting off a financial crisis.

The well-known business, which has 13 shops, as well as a bakery HQ in Bradley, Huddersfield, had promised price reductions in an interview with YorkshireLive back in September after the owners, Daniel and Becki Birmingham, brought the firm out of administration, saving more than 70 jobs.

Two months on, the company has announced price cuts on various products. For instance, a steak slice was £2.60 and is now £2. A ‘family steak and onion pie’ had dropped from £5.50 to £4.99. Sausage rolls are said to be 25% bigger for £1.40. A steak and onion ‘pickup pie’ has dropped from £3.80 to £2.80, which is one of the largest savings, at 26%. A sandwich ‘meal deal’ is down from £7.75 to £5.99 (it includes a sarnie, drink, crisps and confectionary).

Rachel Jones, of Hadfields Bakery, said: “Daniel (the MD) drives and instils a culture of doing what we say we’re going to do and we promised back in September we would decrease our prices so we are sticking to our word!”

She said the company had secured cheaper energy contracts and was now able to reduce its prices.

Daniel Birmingham, director at Hadfields Bakery, with bakery manager Dawn Harling

“We had to put in a lot of price increases previously due to the economic climate in terms of Covid, the Ukraine war and Minimum Wage increase – our raw materials went up in price and we had to sign into gas and electric contracts that went up by 400%.

“We have now managed to sign new energy contracts at a cheaper price so we want to pass those savings back onto the customer rather than keeping our prices the same. We are also very aware there is a cost of living crisis at the moment; we want to offer customers the best prices and offers we can so that they can continue to buy products from us.

“Price competition is a factor – we do regular competitor benchmarking exercises to see where we sit in terms of price versus them and whilst we will always be more expensive than Greggs due to hand crafting all of our products, we want to be as competitive as we can.”
