A derelict mill near the centre of Huddersfield will be demolished today after it went up in flames on Saturday night.
A huge blaze engulfed the building in Old Leeds Road at around 9pm and crews from across West Yorkshire raced to the scene. Shocked onlookers watched on as the flames lit up Huddersfield’s skyline.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation and the building, which is derelict, is set to be demolished today (Sun). A statement issued by West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service at the time of the blaze said: “Crews were called at 9.05pm to reports of a four storey derelict mill on fire, 100 per cent involved in flames. The building measures approximately 66x48m. Eight fire engines plus the aerial ladder are at the scene.

“Firefighters (including support crews) from Huddersfield, Rastrick, Bradford (aerial ladder), Cleckheaton, Meltham, Slaithwaite, Skelmanthorpe, Shipley, Pontefract, Killingbeck, Halifax and Holmfirth are in attendance.”

The fire was completely put out at just before 4am on Sunday. It is understood the derelict building in Old Leeds Road is not listed.
