Residents say they are fed up and ‘disgusted’ about missed bin collections affecting a number of properties in Huddersfield.

People living in 20 bungalows and eight flats in Cottage Homes, an ‘assisted living’ development in Waterloo claim they have complained several times about missed collections since the middle of October. Many of the tenants are elderly and disabled and have been struggling to deal with the overflowing bins. Angela, one of the residents, said the binmen had not turned up on several occasions over weeks going back to the middle of October.

Angela said: “They keep promising us they will be back on schedule. It’s depressing. Every time I go to the bin it is overflowing.”

She said the bins were normally collected on a Tuesday but they had sometimes turned up on Friday and loaded green and brown waste into one truck. “This has been going on since October 17. I have put in written complaints and have been given assurances time after time.”

She said the missed bin collections had affected all 20 bungalows and eight flats. “One lady is blind and has been getting distressed as when she opens her bin it is already full”, added Angela.

Resident Mary Bradbury says she has taken to storing excess rubbish in her garden waste bin. “I am annoyed because I pay full Council Tax.”

Joan Rogers added: “I have been here 16 years and have never known anything like it. It is quite disgusting. It’s been like this – on and off – for eight weeks.”

As the residents were explaining the situation to YorkshireLive on Friday afternoon, a bin wagon arrived and began collecting the bins. However, Angela doesn’t think the problems have been resolved just yet as she’s seen this happen before only for the binmen not to turn up the following week.

“I hope to god they come on Tuesday. But I am not holding my breath.”

Kirklees Council has been approached for comment.
