Huddersfield weatherman Paul Stevens has warned temperatures could drop to -10C tonight as Yorkshire has seen its first snowfall of the year today (Tuesday).

Snow has arrived in parts of Yorkshire on Tuesday with more expected on Wednesday. This comes as a yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place for much of the county with some parts of Yorkshire covered by a warning up until midnight on Thursday. The region has already seen some travel disruption with drivers being urged to plan ahead and prepare for cold and treacherous weather.

As snow continues to fall across Yorkshire, Huddersfield weatherman, Paul Stevens has claimed temperatures could drop to -10C this week. He issued the warning on Twitter, saying: “Good morning all. Well well well most of us waking up to a dusting of snow with temps -1.2c. Tues cloudy with light occasional moderate snow through the day with snow turning sleety at times below 250m. 2c. This evening snow turning heavier before clearing after midnight & turns back to snow all levels.

“2-5cm for most & 10cm+ to higher ground where showers concentrate in bands & conversion zones. NW Kirklees & Calderdale seems most likely. Very icy & cold to end the night. -5C Wed sunny & sub zero all day for many. 0c. Wed night Thurs severe frost -7C with local -10C.

“Thurs odd snow snow shower with good sunny spells. Sub zero again. Last of the freezing nights Thurs. Further Outlook the weekend will bring gales or severe gales with heavy rain at times, possibly a named storm & stormy period Sat-Wed. Here we go again.”

National Highways Yorkshire urged people to “consider if your journey is necessary before taking to roads in severe weather” and to pack essentials like food and water, de-icer, blankets, a snow shovel and warm clothes, following the weather conditions today.

Tuesday evening and Tonight

A wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow will edge eastwards through the evening, eventually clearing to leave dry, clear and very cold conditions in its wake, with a severe frost and a risk of widespread ice forming. Minimum temperature -10 °C.

Wednesday

Crisp and very cold, with sunshine but also widespread ice and severe frost that may persist in places. A developing breeze perhaps bringing isolated wintry flurries to coastal districts later. Maximum temperature 1 °C.
