India Amarteifio’s parents’ encouragement, without being pushy, when she became a working actress at nine, helped the “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” actress become the success she is today.

India Amarteifio’s mother sometimes did her hair to avoid damage when there were no stylists on set capable of working with her natural type 3C hair. As of May 2023, she still lives with her mother in England.

For the making of the Netflix hit, it was notable for her that the on-set stylists created “classy” dos without having to straighten her locks.

The “Bridgerton” prequel addresses serious issues like mental health, racism, and classism while serving the signature bright fashions and steamy love scenes scored by string quartet covers of pop songs the original is known for.

The actress portrays the teenage version of Golda Rosheuvel‘s Queen Charlotte. Rosheuvel reprises her role, as does Adjoa Andoh, who has Arsema Thomas play her younger self as Lady Danbury. Corey Mylchreest portrays the troubled young King George.

As much as Amarteifio would love her family to binge the show with the rest of the world, she joked about one thing they might need to do first when she appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” shortly after the first season came out.

India’s Parents Were Supportive of Her Choice to Act without Any Pressure

Like Dakota Fanning‘s parents, Amarteifio’s folks were not the driving force behind the talented former child star’s career. She made her West End theatre debut at nine and booked her first TV role in “The Interceptor” at 12.

She mused how she does not think she would have been where she is today had she “had the normal Monday to Friday go to school childhood.” The “Sex Education” actress elaborated:

“It’s been incredibly important in creating who I am, and I love what I do, so I never felt any pressure from my parents or anyone around me. It’s always something I’ve wanted to do, and I’ve been driven to do it.”

Watching her single mother, who raised her and her sister in Twickenham, England, “inspired” the Netflix star and gave her the “drive to want to keep pushing” a career in a complex industry.

Amarteifio had agency over her major life decisions.

“She kind of instilled in me how important it is to put your all into something to reap the rewards,” Amarteifio told Teen Vogue in May 2023.

As a mixed-race child of a Ghanaian father and a white British mother, the actress could relate to the role of Queen Charlotte in many ways, having been the only person of color in the room many times.

A part of the role she could not draw from her experience is the monarch’s lack of support. Amarteifio had agency over her major life decisions, while, for instance, Queen Charlotte was sent from her homeland of Germany to marry a stranger.

“If I ever wanted to explore anything, or I wasn’t happy in a certain situation,” the star said in an interview, “my parents were very understanding.”

India Amarteifio Shared How She Wants Her Family to Watch Some Episodes

Amarteifio was amazed at how big everything in America is when she went on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show in late April 2023. The Los-Angeles based host shared other images of prominent landmarks that have popped up on his way to work, her Netflix billboards. One is in a “prime location” above the Liquor Locker, Jimmy quipped.

India Amarteifio matched his light tone, “I’ve made it, I’ve made it.” In light of some of the “steamy scenes” with her co-star Corey Mylchreest in “Queen Charlotte,” she jokily added, “I would also recommend any of my family members to first go to a Liquor Locker before watching this.”

The actress turned 21 in 2022, so she can legally buy those drinks in LA if she wants to. While she hopes her family does watch the show, she has considered making them a spreadsheet to highlight the scenes they must skip over because they cannot miss full episodes.

Amarteifio watched a few episodes with her mom, who knew what to expect and “switched off” that she was watching her child and thought it was a “fabulous show.
