Joni, passionate about painting at the time, recalls how she spent her time singing in the hospital. As a talented painter, she joined a local college to pursue her talent before meeting her ex Brad MacMath.

The veteran singer recalls how Brad left her and fled to California when she was three months pregnant. She had no money, and winter was coming. “I was emotionally weak with many things pulling me in all sorts of unattractive directions.”

Joni admitted that after marrying Chuck, he wasn’t comfortable raising another man’s kid; as a result, the singer felt betrayed by her husband and started working independently before divorcing him. Who Is Joni Mitchell’s Daughter?

In 1965, Joni delivered a baby girl and named her Kelly Dale Anderson. At 21 years of age, the singer knew she couldn’t provide for herself, let alone a child. Unable to look after her daughter, the singer released her for adoption when she was two weeks old.

The existence of Kelly remained private until 1993 when her college roommate sold the adoption story that got published in a tabloid magazine. At that time, Joni’s daughter renamed Kilauren Gibb, had started searching for her biological parents.

After being separated for over 30 years, Joni reunited with Kilauren in 1997 after adoption and medical records connected them. The pair had a fantastic relationship. Joni expressed a joy she had never experienced before when she finally met her daughter.

Despite the passage of three decades, the singer never stopped thinking about her daughter. Kilauren also had to cope with the joy of finding her birth mother and, at the same time, becoming famous. However, Joni and her daughter’s connection didn’t last; at some point, it escalated into hatred and violence.

The prolific songwriter recalled the difficulty of getting along and the constant fights. Joni Mitchell stated that at some point, Kilauren had turned her grandchild against her because of abandonment issues. Thus, forcing them to spend some time apart.

In an interview, however, the Grammy Award winner revealed that she had worked on her relationship with her daughter.
