Inside Julia Roberts’ $8,3M San Francisco Home Where She ‘Can Be a Person, a Mom, a Wife’

“Mona Lisa Smile” star Julia Roberts did not only find the perfect life partner when she married Danny Moder, but together, the couple found their dream home when they purchased the 8.3 million dollar house in San Francisco. 

Julia Roberts is a worldwide sensation. With her movie credits ranging from playing the down-on-her-luck Hollywood call girl in “Pretty Woman” to being a legal clerk in “Erin Brockovich,” Roberts has had quite the run in the industry and won numerous accolades while at it.

Despite living a fairy tale when it comes to marriage, Roberts was not always as lucky. In 1993, she married country singer Lyle Lovett three weeks after they met. Sadly, their marriage ended only two years later, in 1995.

After the split, Roberts became linked to several suitors, including Dylan McDermott, Matthew Perry, Jason Patric, and Liam Neeson. However, she met her knight in shining armor in 2000, and today, she often gushes over him and refers to him as “my person.” She admitted:

“It was meeting Danny … finding my person. When I think about what makes my life my life and makes sense and just shines inside of me, it’s him. Everything has come from that for me.”

While their romance has weathered all storms, it started with a minor scandal. When they met, Roberts was dating Benjamin Bratt, while Moder was still married to Vera Steimberg. 

Moder and Roberts married months after Moder’s divorce from Steimberg became final, which caused speculation about whether she had been the cause of their split. Roberts denied the claims, saying in December 2003:

“He sorted his whole thing out, separate and apart from me. And I sorted my life out, separate and apart from him. I think that’s the only reason we were able to ultimately fall in love with each other and be together.”

She added: “I’m an easy person to point the finger at — ‘she did it ‘ — and I see that. I don’t begrudge people the easy finger-point. It just doesn’t happen to be so.” Their means of meeting notwithstanding, Roberts admitted that meeting Moder was unlike anything she had ever experienced before. 

She shared that none of her previous relationships had shaken her quite like meeting Moder. She told Gwyneth Paltrow in 2018: “I think that first kind of real … ‘seismic shift’ was meeting Danny. Getting married to Danny. That was the first, like, my life will never be the same in the most incredible, indescribable way.”

The couple welcomed their twins, Hazel and Phinneaus, in November 2004 and their third child, Henry, in June 2007. The “Conspiracy Theory” actress told Instyle in 2017, as US Weekly reports:

“The thing is, we have these three human beings who are just a complete reflection of the affection we have for each other.”

INSIDE THE COUPLE’S PARENTING

While she is a star in her career, Roberts admits to being familiar with the highs and lows of parenthood, but that does not deter her from celebrating her achievements. The “Stepmom” star shared:

“There are great things I’ve accomplished, and I’d be happy to accomplish more, of course, to impress my children and my husband. But you know what? I’ve been spoiled already.”

The star has often shared her thoughts on raising independent kids and said: “I raise my kids now. I don’t want them to have some of the struggles that I had. But at the same time, you do need to know how to make your bed and do your laundry and make one meal. These are important life skills. They have to run their own race. They have to have their own experience.”

However, being a mom has not always been a walk in the park. One of the parenting challenges the star has faced is having little time to herself. She disclosed that after becoming a mother, a lot changed, and she no longer had spare time to sit around, adding:

“I don’t have time to get a pedicure, but I sure am happy. Who cares if your feet look bad?”

The “Full Frontal” actress recalls how despite growing up with an actor for a mother, her kids did not, at first, come to terms with the fact that their mother was famous. Roberts shared:

“When they were starting to figure it out, it was like, ‘You’re famous?’ And I said, ‘I think a lot of people might have seen the movie that I’m in or might know who I am.’ Maybe an hour goes by. ‘Are you more famous than Taylor Swift?'”

And yet those innocent kids are now of college-going age. The twins are to begin school in the fall, and Roberts could not be prouder. Asked about her twins, she says: 

“They’re very different. I don’t think of them as similar at all, just kind of the same height. And a very close birthday.”

INSIDE THE COUPLE’S SAN FRANCISCO HOME

Aside from figuring out parenting, Roberts and her cinematographer husband thrive in the property-owning business. The duo owns a lot of property, including two Malibu homes located twenty minutes away from each other.

They also own a home on a ranch in New Mexico, which Roberts admits is peaceful. In addition, the couple also owns three apartments in the heart of New York and a sprawling San Francisco Hawaiian holiday home. However, their most prized possession is their quiet and low-key Presidio Heights, San Francisco abode, which the star purchased for 8.3 million dollars in January 2021.

The five-floor home has 6,245 square feet of living space with mesmerizing views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay from the primary bedroom suite, the kitchen, and the family room. The century-old Victorian Revival-style home boasts two decks and a tiered outdoor patio just off the bottom floor’s bonus room, leading down to a smaller seating area.

The home also features an office, four and a half bathrooms, five bedrooms, an entertainment area, a reading area, a wood-paneled wine cellar, an outdoor dining area, a garden, a two-car tandem garage, and a spare room at the south-facing end of the top floor, which can also serve as an office.

The gourmet kitchen consists of a breakfast area and bar, a six-burner gas stovetop, a walk-in pantry, two sink stations, two dishwashers, and marble countertops. There is also a wet bar, a wine fridge, and a desk area. The lower walls of the kitchen are wrapped in green cabinetry with a large center island. 

Another beautiful feature in the kitchen is a bench-style dining hook, which matches the upper cabinetry with its silver fixtures. A back hallway in the kitchen leads to the second set of stairs connecting the other floors. 

The main bedroom features a large bay window with a bench and a balcony facing the Bay. The master bathroom features his and hers sinks with ample counter spaces and plenty of storage. The white walls and marble tiles match the other rooms in the house. Just outside the bedroom is a large walk-in closet with redwood cabinetry and shelving. 

Before she bought the house, Roberts was often spotted vacationing in San Francisco and the surrounding cities. Its scenic beauty, cultural attractions, diverse communities, and world-class cuisine finally got to her as she decided to make it her second home. 

However, she has yet to move in as the home has been under renovations. The family hopes to move into their new home soon. The neighbors are already excited about having the movie star and her family as their neighbors, with one of them, Marty, saying:

“I think that’s why she’s invested here. It’s a place where she can be a person, a mom, a wife.”

The quiet and low-key neighborhood, which wealthy Silicon Valley business people reportedly prefer, is excited about welcoming Hollywood royalty to the community and one of the neighbors says the home is perfect for Roberts and her husband to raise their kids:

“It’s a beautiful house with great views, but it’s modest. It’s perfect for people who want to just blend in and have a quiet life to raise three children.”

The home is also ideal for quiet family life, as another neighbor said: “There are no bars but lots of restaurants, clothing shops, art shops, designer shops. She will be able to go there without being bothered.”
