Before starring as Harry Styles’ love interest in the recently released LGBTQ-themed movie “My Policeman,” very little was known about David Dawson’s life away from acting. He never talked about his private life until after participating in the film, which he says inspired him.

Dawson has had a long career in the film industry, going as far back as 2005. In that time, he has been an ever-present feature in BBC products, including an acclaimed portrayal of Tony Warren in “The Road to Coronation Street.” He was introduced to American audiences when he appeared in “Peaky Blinders.”

Despite gaining considerable fame, he still kept his personal life private. However, after playing a gay man in “My Policeman,” he revealed in subsequent interviews that he was also gay in real life; hence, he jumped at the opportunity to contribute to the film. He went further to announce that he was getting married in 2023.

David Dawson Is Openly Gay and Is Getting Married Soon

In 2022, Amazon studios released the film “My Policeman,” which was set in 1950s England when homosexuality was illegal. In the movie, Dawson plays the role of Patrick Hazlewood, a gay museum curator who falls for a policeman, Tom Burgess, who is unsure about his sexuality. Harry Styles portrays Burgess.

During interviews post-production, Dawson began to open up about his personal experiences while comparing them to those of his character. As an LGBTQ community member, he said he felt a connection with the script as soon as he read it. That also made it easy for him to accept the role.

During those interviews, he publicly declared his sexuality as a gay man and further took the opportunity to announce that he would be tying the knot in 2023. A seemingly enthused Dawson expressed that:

“I certainly came away from this film, as a gay man myself, with a greater feeling of acknowledging the privilege that I have the freedoms and rights that I have. I’m getting married next year…”

David Dawson Keeps His Fiancé’s Identity Secret

David Dawson has always kept his cards close to his chest. Before 2022, he was not on any social media platform, which made knowing much about him besides his movies almost impossible. However, on March 6, 2022, he posted his first picture on Instagram.

It was a selfie of him and his “The Last Kingdom” co-star Alexander Dreymon. As the actor opens up to the public, more pictures from his life follow. One distinct man has appeared in many of the 29 photos he has shared, and fans have now realized that the person might be his fiancé.

There is one photo, again posted on March 6, with him sitting next to a river. The image of the sun-kissed pair had a caption that read, “Brighton with the Better Half.” That was his first reference to his fiancé on Instagram. However, the actor has never disclosed his name or anything other than the snaps.

David Felt a Special Connection to His “My Policeman” Character

When Dawson was reading the script of the “My Policeman” project, he felt the role was meant for him and meant a lot more than just a movie. It was a movie based on his identity as a gay man and in his country of origin and residence.

He felt inspired by the romance between his character, Hazlewood and Burgess, and how they continued to still find hope and love during a time when identifying as such was considered a criminal offense. He proclaimed it was “a symbol of the strength of the LGBTQ+ community.”

Besides the persecution, Hazelwood did not relegate himself to being just a victim of his era but remained confident and self-assured about his sexual preference. Despite the trials and tribulations, he was also buoyant in his bid to enjoy life as much as he could.

While shooting the film, Dawson also had great chemistry with fellow co-stars Styles and Emma Corrin, who played Marion Taylor, Burgess’ wife. Dawson talked about his experience working alongside Styles, especially during the intimate scenes. He said the fellow British actor was very helpful and determined to make a great movie.
