The video game community has banded together to honor James McCaffrey and his legacy on social media. “James McCaffrey the voice of Max Payne has passed away. Sad to hear this, he brought that character to life. RIP,” tweeted one fan alongside screenshots of Max Payne. A second fan wrote, “Rest in peace to James McCaffrey. Your incredible performances will always be the best part of these games and the unforgettable characters you played. may you live on forever in these stories.” Another fan tweeted, “RIP to one of the most legendary voice actors in the industry.” Meanwhile, another fan vowed to play Max Payne to keep McCaffey’s memory alive. “Oh man that sucks. In memory of him, I’m going to play Max Payne today,” they tweeted.

Prior to his death, McCaffrey — who also voiced the role of Alex Casey in the “Alan Wake” franchise — had recently returned to “Alan Wake 2,” which was released in October of 2023, per Game Informer. The Alan Wake 2 account on X, formerly known as Twitter, also released a statement in honor of McCaffrey. “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved friend and collaborator James McCaffrey, the iconic voice of Max Payne and Alex Casey,” they wrote. “His remarkable talent not only gave life to our characters but also left an enduring impact on our community. Our hearts go out to his family in this time of loss.”
