• Adoption was the only way for Jamie Lee Curtis to start a family and become a mom.

  • One day she received a message from her trans daughter. Since then, she has had to adjust to her trans daughter’s new identity.

  • Be that as it may, Curtis is passionate about motherhood – so much so that she would not let anyone threaten her children.

Hollywood A-lister Jamie Lee Curtis has come to her trans daughter’s defense after homophobic threats against her made the rounds.

The couple tied the knot in 1984 and adopted their first child together, Annie, in 1986 in an open adoption process, Curtis told the outlet. Asked what she meant by “open adoption,” the “Halloween” star explained that she and her spouse met the birth parents, and they chose one another via a lawyer.

When asked why she and Christopher decided to adopt, the California native revealed it was because of “infertility” issues, adding for them, choosing to go that route was their only saving grace:

“Adoption was the only way for us to have a family. People who adopt who are fertile have a more difficult decision than when you have no other option.”

Curtis shared that she went looking for a child to adopt when speaking about how she got Annie. However, the same cannot be said about her son, Tom. “I have no idea how our son came to us,” she stated.

The mom of two explained that several “circumstances occurred, all of which were celestial.” After that, certain events also took place, and the next thing they knew, she and Christopher had a baby boy.

The experience was sentimental for Lee, who revealed that she was present when Tom arrived in the world in March 1996. She even “cut” the umbilical cord upon delivery and was “the first person to hold him.” The doting mother said Tom’s arrival “changed” her.

Curtis further revealed that Annie was planned for while Tom’s experience just happened. “When I saw ‘Father of the Bride, Part II,’ I saw Steve Martin and Diane Keaton having a baby in their forties. For us, there was an opening,” she said.

The producer divulged that Tom was born three weeks earlier and that she and Christopher had limited time to prepare for his arrival. “It was profound in how it occurred.” Lee described her child as “The sweetest little boy. He’s brought so much happiness and joy into our lives.”

How Curtis’ Son Came Out as Transgender

When Tom was sixteen, he began to doubt his gender after a “friend asked me what gender I was.” Naturally, he told the pal that he was “male,” and since that exchange, he would find himself pondering about it until he realized that he “was different.”

Tom attempted to come out as transgender for the first time during that period but encountered a bad experience while in therapy and held off on doing it. Several years later, he told his lover that he was “probably trans” and got embraced for who he was.

Per People, Tom now goes by the name of Ruby since coming out as transgender in 2020. Her mom once shared that calling her by a different name was challenging and that getting used to the new pronoun was difficult.

In a sit-down interview with the publication in October 2021, Ruby revealed she hesitated to tell her parents in person, although she initially planned to.

She was overwhelmed by fear and felt “intimidated,” but remembered her parents “had been accepting of her” since birth:

“It was scary – just the sheer fact of telling them something about me they didn’t know. It was intimidating – but I wasn’t worried. They had been so accepting of me my entire life.”

Still, Ruby avoided telling her mom and dad face-to-face in the family’s Los Angeles backyard. Instead, she later told her mother via text message that she was transgender. Curtis recounted the experience and shared that she instantly “called” Ruby.

Curtis Embraced Her Child’s New Identity

The children’s author disclosed that she and Ruby had a heart-to-heart that left them in “tears.” Curtis still gets emotional talking about Ruby’s journey and chooses to be attentive by listening and “learning new terminology” to be supportive of her:

“I am new at it. I am not someone who pretends to know much about it. And I’m going to blow it. I’m going to make mistakes.”

When speaking about what she has learned since Ruby came out, the activist said she pays attention to the pace of her “speech” and has become “mindful” of the things she says and how she says them. However, Curtis did admit that she “messed” up here and there, which was expected.

She stated that if one person comes across her photo with Ruby and says to themselves, “‘I feel free to say this is who I am,’ then it’s worth it.” Curtis further explained that she was not trying to force things onto people but was merely sharing her family’s experience as a support system for Ruby:

“I am a grateful student. I’m learning so much from Ruby. The conversation is ongoing.”

Meanwhile, Ruby, a video editor, said her mom was doing her best to be there for her, which was enough, adding, “helping others is something everyone should do.”

Ruby got married in May 2022, and her mom talked about the wedding months prior during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Curtis revealed that her daughter would be walking down the aisle in her backyard and that she would be officiating the ceremony. She added both her children wed in her backyard, which “brings me to tears.”

Ruby’s Life Was Threatened

Though the “Trading Place” star sounds like a proud mom, she expressed concern about Ruby’s life being in danger. Curtis revealed there were threats made against her daughter during an interview in October 2022, to her shock.

Curtis said people threatened to “annihilate” Ruby and people like her just for being transgender. She added that she could not fathom “the level of hatred” among society which is “terrifying.”

The “My Girl” star admitted that she is “scared” for her child’s life but noted that she has a “voice” that she intends to use while encouraging others to do the same if they want to see change.
