Jason Momoa’s mom, Coni Momoa, worked several jobs to make ends meet. She raised her son singlehandedly in Iowa after separating from Jason’s father in Hawaii.

Jason Momoa is most recognized for his roles in “Aquaman,” where he played the titular character, and “Game of Thrones,” where he brought to life Khal Drogo. However, not many know where his career began – in the “Stargate: Atlantis” series.

His father’s ethnic Hawaiian heritage has been discussed in the past, but his mother’s influence is rarely a topic. Coni Momoa is Jason Momoa’s mom and hero.

The actor is close to the women in his life and is a self-proclaimed mama’s boy and grandma’s boy. “Raised by women,” he proudly said in an Instagram post.

Jason Momoa’s Mom Is a Woman of Art

Coni hails from Norwalk, Iowa, and raised her biracial son to be proud of his Polynesian culture. Although she gave birth to her child in Honolulu, Hawaii, she and Jason relocated to Norwalk when he was six and stayed there until his college years.

Jason said he was the product of opposite worlds and dealt with the harsh consequences of being a mixed-race teen.

Like her son, Coni has a career that requires creativity. She is a photographer and painter, who Jason described as a wanderer. He said:

“My mom is an artist in every way.”

Jason Momoa’s Mom Worked Four Jobs to Make Ends Meet

After separating from Jason’s father and moving back to her hometown, Coni had to raise her son as a single mother. She worked three to four jobs to make ends meet while her son studied high school. To this day, the actor is grateful for all Coni has done and calls her his superhero.

At 12, Coni’s boy would spend summers in Hawaii, where his father resided. Jason said he was the product of opposite worlds and dealt with the harsh consequences of being a mixed-race teen. Still, he loved the Midwest and the people who took pride in their homes.

“I love the Midwest, and it’s the same people (as in Hawaii) — people who don’t want to leave their land, who are very content where they’re at. They take great pride in being farmers,” he said.

Jason Momoa Likes to Put Emphasis on How Much His Mother Did for Him

Although Jason prides himself on being Hawaiian and often draws attention to his island heritage, he also usually shares about how his mom influenced him. As the person who raised him, Jason is grateful for all Coni has sacrificed for their family.

He sometimes posts Instagram tributes to his mother and maternal grandmother, who also helped him become the person he is today. In one of his posts, Jason revealed that he always needs to go home to Iowa for his grandmother, whom he loves.

Jason memorialized his love for his family by getting tattoos of their first names in their handwriting. The artwork is placed on his chest. His mother and her family may have raised Jason, but his father also tried to be present in the Hollywood star’s life.

Sadly, like his parents, Jason Momoa’s relationship with his wife of 16 years, Lisa Bonet, ended in divorce. The pair, who share two children, once thought they would always be in love with each other, but despite their reported efforts to mend the relationship, they still called it quits.

The former couple continues to share a good relationship. In 2022, Jason brought a Christmas tree to Bonet’s home and spent the holidays together for their children’s sake.
