John Legend Wants to Clarify His Original Thoughts On Kanye West’s Friendship

John Legend has changed his mind regarding his first words about his friendship with Kanye West. Last month, John defied Hollywood’s Holy Grail by really stating the truth about another star when he stated that he and Kanye are no longer as close as they once were. Although John gave an explanation that the rift came after Kanye’s ill-fated presidential run, most outlets ran with the story as “JOHN HATES KANYE! “, and he wants everyone to know that this is not the case. In fact, he’s still open to the friendship, but Kanye has to make the first move.

John mentioned his prior statements regarding Kanye in a recent interview with The New Yorker (via People), but he wanted to clarify a few points. It’s clear that John, like the rest of the world, misses the old Kanye, but he doesn’t want everyone to assume the two are feuding. So he’s making a leisurely Moonwalk back to his piano to conjure up a remix to his previous statements, flinging some blame at a few different media sources that took what he said and spun it into a false narrative about their friendship.

“Yeah, what it got represented as was, we quit being buddies because he backed [Donald] Trump,” Legend clarified. “That was the Rupert Murdoch version of the tale, which was all over the New York Post and Fox News.”

“What I was saying was that he was really furious with me because I didn’t support his running for President, and that was the underlying motivation for our friendship strained.”

I’m not sure how Fox News made it appear any different, but that’s what I got from what he said. If everyone on the Titanic had known it was going to sink, I’m sure they would not have boarded. And this is the same thing-why go down with a sinking ship? His prior interview had distilled down to the chorus of Big John’s “I Don’t Fuck Wit CHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU But clearly, John didn’t appreciate the response he received from his candor, so he wants everyone to know he’s not completely done with Kanye. He’s up for it as long as Kanye is willing to put on his beaded wig and sing an updated version of “Reunited,” but Kanye has to start the reconciliation.

“I don’t know what will happen in the future, but he was very upset with me that I didn’t support him and I supported Joe Biden. It is up to him if he can overcome that.”

Although Legend believes that political opinions “should not be everything in your relationship,” he does “feel that some things you believe in are markers of your character, and certainly that will effect your friendships.”

I hope John doesn’t have to say anything further about this since there’s no reason to keep justifying what he said. However, I doubt Kanye will change his tune very soon. Plus, with his constant war against those who have wronged him, I doubt he has time in his hectic schedule to reestablish old acquaintances.
