Jonathan Majors’ Daughter Was Born before He Attended Yale Drama School

Right before enrolling at Yale’s prestigious drama program, the “Lovecraft Country” star welcomed his daughter, Ella, with an unidentified partner. Jonathan compared the expectations he had about working with Spike Lee with what he felt about Ella’s arrival:

“Whatever you think it’s going to be, it’s probably not going to be that. I experienced that when my daughter was coming. I’m thinking, ‘Okay, I’m getting ready to become a dad.’ But then you become a dad, and it’s like… there’s no game plan for this.”

His pastor’s mother primarily raised him as a single parent, and the family experienced stretches of homelessness. He has worked very hard so his child would never want for anything, but she needs to understand where it comes from.

The Actor’s Daughter Lives Far Away from Him in Atlanta

Jonathan Majors‘ daughter lives on his farm in Atlanta, where she can grow up outside the spotlight with her cockapoo, a cocker spaniel/poodle hybrid. During the hard lockdown in 2020, he could only spend ten days with Ella.

The father and daughter duo enjoy shopping together and reading classic works from Roald Dahl, and “A Series Of Unfortunate Events.”

The outdoorsy loner connects with the works of Mary Oliver, steeped in the natural world, and lets his child memorize her poetry.

Jonathan Majors Had Moments of Vulnerability Whenever Ella Felt Frustrated

The mother of his child called him up to speak to their frustrated and angry seven-year-old in 2020. When people were taking to the streets to protest racial injustice sparked by George Floyd’s death, the child had trouble accepting one of the outward indicators of her racial identity.

Ella could not comprehend why her hair won’t “fall down” and why her tresses “go up.” There are no details about her mom other than she is of a different race than Jonathan, which explains why she needed his assistance on this delicate subject. Over FaceTime he told Ella:

“You have a crown. That’s why your hair goes up. Your hair, your crown, came from daddy, came from his mama, came from his father, came from his sister. Sometimes that crown can get you in trouble in this world, and it’s not right. And some people want to take that crown from you.”

Geographically far away from

, the exchange about how her hair differs from the style perpetuated by the world as ideal left Jonathan feeling very vulnerable. He worried if the youngster could understand what he tried to tell her.

In anticipation of Ella’s adolescence, “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” star says he feels terrible for the “big-headed boys” who cannot deal with her – or him. In their household, they teach value and self-worth. On the subject of smiling, he instilled in her:

“Your emotions belong to you. No man can make you do anything or feel anything. And like her father, she’s not easily impressed.”

When she finally views his work, she will see strong black female characters portrayed by Regina King and Zazie Beetz.

The star has vowed to avenge the child who tragically lost her dad to police brutality, clarifying that the “vengeance will come in peace. But it’s on.”

Jonathan Wants to Make His Daughter Ella Proud of What He Does

While promoting “The Harder They Fall” in October 2020, Jonathan admitted that though his then eight-year-old did not care about what work he does, Ella is a consideration when deliberating over which project to take.

He is acutely aware that someday his mixed-race daughter will watch his films, and he hopes she will be proud of his choices and understand why he signed on.

When she finally views his work, she will see strong black female characters portrayed by Regina King and Zazie Beetz in “The Harder They Fall” and Jurnee Smollett and Aunjanue Ellis in “Lovecraft Country.”

Jonathan equates the education system‘s insistence on referring to ‘black history’ as anything but ‘American history’ to the equal but equal Jim Crow era brand of thinking.

He strives to give his daughter an education in the history of American-American people not limited to a pop quiz at the end of February about Harriet Tubman, Rosa Park, and Michael Luther King.

Jonathan has mastered

the art

of just giving enough information without looking aloof. Very little is known about the artist’s life, which is by design. It comes down to his desire to get to know someone, to unravel a mystery slowly.

He shuns social media because of this approach to life. The Texan would much instead get his fans to know him as an artist over time in his work than the instant gratification one would say, get on Twitter.
