As the coronation of King Charles III comes to a close, discussions around the next in line for the British throne have taken center stage. With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8th, 2022, her first-born son, Prince Charles, assumed the position of sovereign while the rest of the family moved up in the line of succession. Although the coronation ceremony formalized his place as monarch, Charles became king the moment his mother passed away. The ceremony saw Prince William, who is next in line, take on a prominent role, along with his children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom, having ruled for seven decades. She ascended to the throne at the age of 25, while King Charles, at 74 years old, is the oldest heir to accede to the throne. Alongside him, his wife, Camilla, was crowned and became queen. The line of succession to the British throne has seen several changes in recent years with the introduction of the Succession to the Crown Act in 2013. This act eliminated gender as a factor in determining the order of progression, bringing 24 members of the royal family onto the official protocol in succession to the throne.

At the top of the list is King Charles III, followed by his first-born son, Prince William, who stands to inherit the throne after his father. Prince George, the young prince, will one day take on the mantle of the monarchy. Princess Charlotte, as a spare heir to the throne, will act as a support to her big brother until he has a family of his own. She has also created history by being the first female royal not to lose her spot in line for the throne to a male heir. Prince Louis, the fifth in line, takes over the post from his Uncle Harry.

Prince Harry, with the birth of Prince Louis, became sixth in line for the throne, and his daughter, Princess Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, is eighth in line behind her big brother Archie. Beatrice and Eugenie, the Duke of York’s daughters, both find their places in the succession line further down, with Princess Beatrice next in line followed by Princess Eugenie. Princess Beatrice’s daughter, Sienna, was born in September 2021, making her the 11th in line.

The line of succession gets longer with Zara Tindall, Princess Anne’s daughter, married to former English rugby player Mike Tindall, taking the 18th spot in the protocol followed by her daughters Mia and Lena. Rounding out the list is Zara and Mike’s son, Lucas Tindall, at 24th in line. With a succession line that comprises descendants from multiple generations, the British monarchy is prepared to pass on the mantle of sovereignty.
