Parents will move heaven and earth for their kids, and little ones have a unique way of spreading indescribable joy wherever they go. Sadly, innocent fun and adventuring outside sometimes leave kids vulnerable.

One family experienced a nightmarish incident while they were on a camping trip. What was planned to be an unforgettably fun and exciting time quickly became the moment their worst fears came true.

A ONE-IN-A-MILLION BOY

Nine-year-old Everett Freeman was a sweet and silly kid who enjoyed living life to the full. His beautiful soul made him the type of friend everyone longs to have, and his dad, Korey Freeman, described him as “one in a million.”

Korey adored his beautiful brood and wouldn’t trade their family of five for anything in the world. They enjoyed spending time outside and were always up for an adventure—little did they know it would lead to a devastating loss.

The environment on Huckleberry Island in Georgian Bay, where the Freeman family was camping, had many dangerous spots.

While the kids were playing a game of hide-and-seek, things went dismally wrong. The emotional father shared: “Everett was playing with some of his younger cousins, and the game kind of petered out, and he wandered off.”

HE WAS MISSING

With tears in his eyes, the dad explained the course of events that started the worst experience in his life. After his son had been gone for a while, the family called the Ontario Provincial Police.

They reported Everett missing on August 12, and authorities didn’t waste any time. They started searching for the youngster instantly, and the family was surprised by everyone joining the search efforts.

Friends, family, and strangers stepped in to assist, and it meant the world to Korey. He expressed:

“I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone involved. It was so many people. It was unbelievable. They pulled out all the stops, a helicopter in the sky, people searching through the night.”

THEY FOUND HIM

The environment on Huckleberry Island in Georgian Bay, where the Freeman family was camping, had many dangerous spots. There were sharp rocks and bodies of water that could be dangerous to navigate in the dark.

Tragically, the search ended one day later, on August 13, when the dive team found a body. Korey explained:

“The dive team was brought in to search the water, and they found him close to those rocks he would avoid. It seemed like he must have slipped and fell in.”

HIS SISTER WAS DEVASTATED

The father revealed that his son had always been cautious but couldn’t swim. They were heartbroken because of the massive loss, and Korey added that his son’s passing affected one family member particularly deeply.

His sister Piper was “really feeling” the loss because the pair were close—she lost her big brother and best friend at the same time. Korey said:

“Everybody loved him, and he loved life. He loved to laugh, he was just so full of fun, he was so fun to hang out with, and we’re just going to miss him so much.”

GRATEFUL FOR THE LOVE AND SUPPORT

Amid Everett’s passing, the family was immensely grateful for the messages of support. The father shared: “Despite the crushing grief, we feel more loved and cared for than ever before.”

Korey also noted that while they were heartbroken, they were thankful for their time with their son. The dad added:

“We love you so much. We miss you. We can’t wait to see you again. Death will not have the final say because Jesus is alive.”

HE LIVED LIFE WELL

In the youngster’s obituary, it was noted that his death left a big hole in the hearts of his loved ones. It also described the wonderful person Everett was, stating:

“Everett lived his short life on earth to the max. He loved life, and he lived it well. While most saw him as a quiet, sweet boy, to those who had the honor of knowing him well, he was phenomenally extraordinary.”

“He was gifted with an incredibly brilliant mind … He was gentle, patient, humble, and kind. He had the brightest smile and most delightful giggle,” the obituary continued.
