Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd first met in 2009 during a Broadway production of “Burn The Floor.” However, it was not love at first sight because Murgatroyd thought Chmerkovskiy was arrogant.

She would later admit that she had been wrong about him after realizing how generous he was to the entire cast. From there, their friendship began growing.

Two years later, their paths crossed again after Murgatroyd joined Chmerkovskiy on “Dancing With The Stars,” where he’d been a pro dancer since 2006.

There had always been an attraction between the two, but they were seeing other people at the time. Murgatroyd was dating her future DWTS costar Damian Whitewood while Chmerkovskiy was engaged to his fellow DWTS pro dancer Karina Smirnoff.

As fate would have it, they found themselves single in 2012 and began to build a solid friendship. They started with “friendship dates” and eventually went Instagram official that same year.

Less than a year later, in November 2013, out of the blue, the couple shocked fans when they broke up, with Murgatroyd telling People:

“My heart was broken.”

She says that when driving to the airport after their breakup talk, he asked her why she was taking all her clothes and bags back. When she said it was because they’d broken up, she realized he had not meant the breakup to be forever.

On the other hand, Chmerkovskiy immediately realized that breaking up with Murgatroyd was a mistake, so he used every chance he got to hang around her.

The pair remained broken up for close to a year and even saw other people during their time apart, but in October 2014, they reconciled and rekindled their old flame. To seal their relationship, the professional dancers got engaged on December 5, 2015, during an episode of DWTS. Chmerkovskiy confessed to her:

“I’m in love with you, and I will be in love with you for the rest of my life.”

More good news awaited. After months of posting beautiful maternity pictures on Instagram and documenting her pregnancy journey, Murgatroyd and Chmerkovskiy welcomed son Shai Aleksander on January 4, 2017. They announced the lovely news with a statement, saying:

“This is, without a doubt, the best thing that has ever happened to us!”

Six months later, the lovebirds married at the City Hall, in an intimate ceremony, then again at Oheka Castle in Long Island, New York. Murgatroyd’s father walked the fairytale ballgown-clad bride down the aisle while Val, Chmerkovskiy’s brother, acted as the best man.

CAUGHT UP IN A WAR

The couple has been going strong since and has not had significant turbulence in their relationship until February 2022. Chmerkovskiy, a Ukrainian citizen, was in his home country serving as a judge on the competition series “World of Dance” when the Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February 24.

His accommodation was two blocks from the parliament building, which went under siege after Russia launched the large-scale invasion of Ukraine. Murgatroyd recalls:

“So he was literally there in the center of Kyiv. And, you know, at times, he would say, ‘Don’t call me, don’t call me. They have to turn the lights off. Windows closed, no TV, [Russian troops are] coming.'”

Murgatroyd says for the eight to nine days that her husband was in Ukraine, she thought he would die because he was trapped in Kyiv

Chmerkovskiy was frantic as he packed his bags, but fortunately, he made it to neighboring Poland by train before flying back to California.

After the war broke out, Murgatroyd pleaded with her fans to send prayers her husband’s way, and shared how frightened and overwhelmed she felt.

Fortunately, the two reunited on March 2 after Chmerkovskiy arrived at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The couple was spotted sharing an emotional embrace during their reunion, which Murgatroyd referred to as “insane” due to the amount of press present. She wrote:

“I have never hugged him so tight. Shaking and forever grateful. Now it’s time to heal. We cannot go back to our normal. Our lives are forever changed. We have a new normal, and that’s okay.”

MURGATROYD AND HER HUSBAND HAVE SUFFERED TWO MISCARRIAGES

In a recent interview with People, Murgatroyd opened up about her fertility journey and two miscarriages. She recalls when she had her first miscarriage in the fall of 2020 in a Whole Foods bathroom.

She was five months pregnant, and even though she tried to convince herself that it would be okay, she knew deep down that she had lost her baby. She recalls:

“With the trauma, I took a very long time to get over it. It was months and months of crying most nights in bed by myself, crying in the shower. It was a lot of denial. What had I done wrong?”

However, nine months later, she found out she was pregnant again and was excited to fly to New York to meet up with Chmerkovskiy and surprise him with the news. Sadly, days before she jetted out, she miscarried again.

The lovebirds thought they were out of the woods, but in October 2021, Murgatroyd was in the hospital, having been loaded into an ambulance by a team of medics at her Malibu home.

When she came to after collapsing in her son’s room, she placed a 911 call. Days prior, she had tested positive for the coronavirus.

She was entirely devoid of body strength and could not so much as feed her son. But when her breath started failing, she knew she had to act. At the hospital, she called her husband, who was in Ukraine.

Chmerkovskiy thought he heard the doctor say his wife was pregnant over the phone, but before she and her husband could celebrate, the doctor told her she had lost the baby. It was the third time she had miscarried in two years, which was devastating.

The couple has had a rough couple of years, and following their three miscarriages; they are now working with a team of fertility doctors. They have already started the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and are hopeful that soon they will become parents again.

They are also more open about fertility issues. Chmerkovskiy says he is beyond proud of his wife for speaking out about the problem that affects many people globally yet is seldom discussed. They hope to encourage anyone going through the same predicament as they have.
