A man died after a Jaguar car failed to stop for police and then travelled through a red traffic light in Huddersfield, according to investigators.

Mohammed Tariq, 25, was travelling in a Jaguar XF which failed to stop for police in Huddersfield and then collided with a Mercedes being driven by a member of the public. Mr Tariq, of Dewsbury, died at the scene. It is believed that Mr Tariq had gone by the name Zafeer. The incident happened just before midnight on Thursday, August 18, 2022, on St Andrew’s Road, Huddersfield.

The circumstances of the incident were investigated by the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which established that the Jaguar had failed to stop for police but that a pursuit did not actually take place. The IOPC would not say if Mr Tariq was the driver of the Jaguar car. A previous report suggested that he was the driver of the Jaguar.

In a statement, the IOPC said: “Our thoughts remain with Mohammed Tariq, his friends and family and all those affected by his death.

“Following a referral from West Yorkshire Police we began an independent investigation into the circumstances of a fatal collision on St Andrew’s Road towards the crossroads with Gas Works Lane, Kirklees, in August 2022.

“We established that on 18 August, a Jaguar XF failed to stop for West Yorkshire Police officers when requested to do so but a pursuit did not take place.

“The Jaguar driver then travelled through a red light signal and collided with a Mercedes being driven by a member of the public. Mr Tariq sadly died at the scene. A passenger in the Jaguar and the Mercedes driver suffered injuries.

“During our six-month investigation IOPC investigators analysed vehicle-mounted camera footage ad CCTV footage, officer and witness accounts were obtained and police radio transmissions and incident logs were reviewed.

“Our investigation concluded there was no indication any police officer may have behaved in a manner that would justify the bringing of disciplinary proceedings or committed a criminal offence. All officers were treated as witnesses and cooperated fully with the investigation.

“We shared the evidence gathered during the investigation with the coroner to assist with the inquest, which we hoped helped answer questions Mr Tariq’s loved ones may have had around his death. At an inquest in December 2023 the coroner recorded a verdict of ‘accidental death’.”

At the time of the tragedy, tributes were paid to Zafeer after his death was announced on the Dewsbury and Surrounding Area Janaza announcements Facebook page.
